Last Saturday I fell and damaged teeth 7 and 8. 7 became lose and 8 chipped. After going to the endodonist they determined both teeth needed a root canal. After the root canal I went to the dentist to place my temporary crown.

I am terrified of the permenat crown. When talking to my dentist he said I can no longer use those teeth to bite in to anything, even soft food like a banana. I am terrified that if I do, they will break off with what remains of my teeth and was told the only option is an extraction. Right now I still have my temporary and am worried sick, afraid to bite down or even chew.

Is it true that I can no longer use those teeth? How often or common is it to have your crown break with the tooth inside? Is extraction the only option? I want to be careful, but depression and anxiety is hitting very hard right now.

Can I still eat hard foods with my molars as long as I don't bite using those teeth? Is it possible to bite using the other side?

Sorry for all of the questions and thank you in advance for your time.

I can only tell you about my experience. At 11 years of age I was knocked over at school & damaged 3 of my front top teeth, one of the central front teeth needed a crown. From memory I initially I had to be careful but I ate pretty normally through my teens. It took a car accident I was in at the age of 19yrs to further damage those teeth, i was in the back & my teeth connected with the back of the front seat when the car I was in collided with a bank. The tooth the crown was in got broken along with the other 2 teeth that were weakened by the treatment needed after the first accident. I have worn a partial plate since then. I am now 70 years old.

Thank you for sharing you experience. I'm sorry that you went through all of that. Your experience helps me understand a little more the strength of the crown. I don't want to be foolish with decisions I make, but also don't want to live in fear for the rest of my life either.

You need to be a bit careful with temporary crowns they're designed to come off fairly easily. When the permanent crown goes on, just treat them like any other tooth.

Thank you for your response. It helps ease the fear.

I was nervous eating with my temporary crown , the dentist struggled to get my temporary crown off since she did a very good job placing it.

I am carefully with what I eat with my crown

Thank you for your response. I too, have been very careful with my temporary crown.
