That sounds like the typical presentation of cervical (um the dental type) abrasion. Make sure you're brushing with a soft bristle tooth brush, using Sensodyne toothpaste or equivalent, not grinding your teeth too much (use that nightguard!), and try to avoid too much sawing motion with the brush (try circular strokes). It's a tad difficult to brush in a circular fashion, but that's what I hear is supposed to help.

One other theory of mine might be that it could also be related to the abrasives used in toothpaste. You could try using a different brand with less grittiness (Aquafresh gel?) and see if that reduces it from occuring.
