About a month ago I started on this year after 30 years of dental phobia. It's been busy month I have to say, the initial first appointment, then periodontal cleaning two weeks ago, and yesterday I had 7 extractions and impressions made. Thankfully I managed to get through it with the help of my fab dentist and her assistant, Diazepam again, and my stress ball - I didn't need my headphones this time (they were a bit of pain last time anyway because they kept falling out of my ears :) ). I have to admit the injections hurt a bit, especially on the roof of my mouth, but they were quick, and the noise was a bit strange to say the least. I was a bit worried about eating yesterday but I was fine with the soft food, and I dosed up with Ibuprofen just in case pain kicked in but there was hardly any pain at all and I can say the same for today as well - just a bit sore if anything. I went on my own but my mum and sister picked me up - I did have a mini cry in my mums arms when I came out but that was the shock of it rather than anything else and minutes later I was fine and chatting. I think I have said it before but I will say it again - it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be, the meds definitely helped to calm me and also a lot of it was because of the dentist I think - she was so gentle and caring and constantly asking if I was okay. I have learnt now that seems half the battle - finding a dentist that can provide a dental phobic person the care and attention they so desperately need.

This is great to read. Everyone's success stories are helping me to feel a little braver. How did you find your dentist and are you allowed to say who she is?

Hi Thecatsmother,

Reading the success stories on here along with my very wobbly front teeth gave me the final push to do something about it. I've read on here so many times it's not as bad as people think it is going to be and making the actual initial contact and getting through the door was the hardest part - and for me it was.

I just ended up researching dentists for two months then shortlisted those I thought I might be comfortable with and then emailed them my sorry saga. Nobody was taking on NHS patients but our area is quite hard for NHS anyway (Brighton), so I have ended up having to go private but for me this is a good thing I think because she can spend much more time with me. I basically made my final decision on their response and whether they even bothered replying - which some didn't even bother !

Well it’s now 2 1/2 weeks that I have had my top denture. Several people got all emotional when they saw them! I just about managed to get through my Christmas dinner - although it took extra time ?. Those that knew I had them I could tell were keeping a little eye on me, very amusing, those that didn’t know were none the wiser, yay. I’ve got used to it in my mouth but it is definitely the eating that’s taking time - it’s all a learning curve and one I have no regrets about. At some point this year the bottom ones will be coming out so I’ll have to go through it all again - I’m dreading it but at least I know what to expect now and I know I can do it (it will still be with the help of diazepam though). On a slightly different note, I just wanted to say that our stories and experiences help people in different ways without us realising - my office manager has health anxieties and she told me she was so inspired by what I had done despite me being terrified that she has finally booked her mammogram that she had been putting off ! It’s lovely to know that we are helping people in one way or another. Also, I work for a GP surgery and I have been asked by one of the partners if they can add this website to our webpage for our patients.

Thank you for your story I have 2 partials one bottom one top I’m really struggling with my speech and can’t eat properly it’s driving me mad x

Hi Zara B, I have gone back to being a bit of a chicken ? as there is no socialising as such. When I’m at home on my own or just with my daughter I take it out to eat, I need to be stern and make myself practice really. My speech isn’t too bad - I suspect we are more aware of it rather than other people. Did you have top and bottom at the same time?

Thanks for the reply, are you based in the UK? No had my bottom ones done first and they are now fine yes loose but bearable but my top is so hard to adjust you, just gagging all the time

Sorry about late reply - been taking some time out. Yes I’m in the UK. How are you getting on now? I’m due a deep cleaning on my remaining bottom ones next month and I’m starting to get scared already. They’ve had bonding on since November but I can see they are getting wobbly again - don’t think they’ll last until October some how - that’s when my lovely dentist is back from maternity leave.
