Hi all , I thought i would share my on going saga .. I have eye pain which feels like a burning /stinging / pressing sensation in (only) my right eye which started around 2010 , I initially went to the GP thinking a thorn or branch may have scratched or gone in my eye as i had been doing some forestry work a few weeks before , but i didn't recall anything significant at the time .
I was sent to the eye infirmary everything checked out ok , but i was given drops for mild dry eye which did nothing for the discomfort i had in my eye .

I kept going back to the GP as it was getting no better , eventually in 2011 i paid to see a neurologist privately and he could see nothing wrong , I did mention to them around 6 months prior to the symptoms starting that i got hit in the eyebrow by a log i was chopping and thought it may have been something to do with that as it does feel tingly when its touched and remains swollen there to this day .
The neurologists i have seen dont think it is anything to do with it though.

I kept returning to the GP as there was something definitely wrong , eventually he sent me to neurologist who did some tests and asked for a ct scan which showed no problems , over the next few years , im not sure of the dates as the appointments were so far apart i lost track !!
I had another CT (they lost the first one ) an MRI and an MRA which all showed to be clear .
They gave me all sorts of tablets to take , Pregabalin ,gabapentin , and a few others which i cant remember the names of , none of them helped , they just kept saying double the dose on most of them !! . it got to the point where i was walking around work bumping into things they were making me feel as though i was drunk !! .
In one of the neurology appointments i had they mentioned one of my tooth roots looked close to a nerve so i changed to a private dentist and had a few fillings done , he couldn't see any problems on the xray but i said one of my teeth, the top right molar (2nd one in) had a bit of a strange taste to it , it already had a filling but not painful , I asked him to look at that tooth considering the eye problem on that side , he took the filling out and said i needed a root canal and crown which was done , this was approximately 3 years ago every time i go for a check up i say i do get the odd pain in that tooth but he says it is fine ,
i had the last neurology appointment 5 months ago and am currently taking lamotrigine which is not helping at all .
Over the last 12-18 months my vision has deteriorated in just my right eye but left eye is near perfect (according to the opthamologists) and the eye pain is getting worse , also when i floss around the tooth i get a bad taste and it seems to aggravate the eye pain , i had a dentist check up 2 weeks ago , he did another x ray and said the tooth is fine ,
I have made an appointment with another dentist this monday and praying they find something wrong with the tooth as its been nearly 8 years this has been going on and getting steadily worse .....

PS The only thing which has helped was when the dentist did the local anesthetic before the root canal and also i had a nerve block injection in my eyebrow near where i got hit by the log , they gave me a local anesthetic before the main injection , but as soon as the local wore off the pain was back as before ..

sorry for the long post ..
What did you end up doing? Did you pull it out? Did it work successfully? I am having a similar issue

Hi Jojo,

Thanks for sharing your story. I think I have a very similar one and would be very interested in comparing notes as we go through this process (thank you internet!). I had a cavity three years ago that got infected and eventually I had to get a root canal done. However, the first one wasn't done well and I had to go in for a retreatment. During this process, I'm afraid that perhaps one of the procedures created a hairline crack in the upper left molar. Since this whole thing happened, I have strong discomfort in my left eye which gets aggravated with screen time and it gets to the point where I have to close it and rest it after 6 or 7pm at night. It is very frustrating as it severely limits my productivity. Googling images of the trigeminal nerves, I see they are very connected to the eye and I'm not sure what's causing it. I will keep you posted on my next visit. I'm going to get a scan and going to try to get my tooth checked again. If you figure yours out, please let me know? What kind of discomfort do you feel in your eye? Does it bother you when you read on your computer?

Thanks!!

Thank you both so much for your reply. My eye has went down a little - but it is still not right or back to normal. My Doctor is sending me for a CAT scan to check it is not sinus issues. But the scan plus results will take another 4 - 5 weeks to come back.

I have had blood taken to rule out things and everything was clear EXCEPT a high inflamation level. I asked if that meant the infection could still be present in my tooth/gum area and the Doctor said not really, inflamation can be from anything like the common cold. But it has to be high for some reason - and I feel fine elsewhere.

My RC tooth/cheek area is still 'niggly' and I have no idea what to do. I don't want to get any dental work done until my scan comes back because my Doctor did say it may be nerve damage although like I said, they're not sure at all. My dentist seems to think the infection should be gone in my tooth, however they do want to finish it all off and double check.

All the Doctors and dentists keep saying that an infection from your tooh SHOULDN'T link at all to eye pain - but it just seems like far too much of a coincidence to me that this all came about at the same time.

I really want all this over with (has been going on in total for almost 13months now) but I am scared if I wait for the scan my possible infection will get worse, OR if I get more dental work done and it affects the nerve more (if that's what it is), OR all along this tooth/cheek/eye pain is sinusitis and I keep getting unecessary work done!

Nightmare. Again, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for replying again.
Hi dear Jojo.
I am in a similar situation now. What did you do? Did you pull out the tooth? Or what did you do to solve the problem? Your reply is appreciated.

I had root canal treatment on the 4 December, 2013 and ever since then have had sore eyes and a strange feeling in my head which sometimes is a slight headache. I have been back to the endodontist and he said the tooth is healing well. (I had an abscess).

I have been to see an ophthalmologist, a Maxillofacial consultant and had a brain scan. Everything was negative. I have also seen a neurologist who seems to think it's migraine, but I don't think it is as it started the day after I had root canal treatment.

I'm now considering having the tooth out as I can't stand feeling unwell every day.
