Hi i'm new to this forum and site and having trawled my way through dozens of websites I have to say, so far this one is the best by far. I have a big fear of dentists which come from treatment I had 10 years ago following a tooth extraction.
10 Years ago I visited the dentist following a cracked tooth after the birth of my second child and compared to giving birth the loss of this tooth was the worst experience I have ever had. On my 1st visit I went through a very lengthy checkup and was advised they would attempt to repair the tooth but failed to xray it before hand. They gave me the injection, which in all honesty was quite bareable and I coped and was sent back to the waiting area for the effects of numbing to start and while he saw a quick checkup. While in the waiting area I began to feel like I couldn't swallow which in turn went to panic of will I next not be able to breathe. The entire bottom right of my lips, tongue and throat felt numb and closing in. They called me back in and was assured this was normal (as does this website), laid back down in the chair and the dentist got to work. After 10 minutes in the chair and me feeling much calmer the dentist then informed me I had a choice. I could go back another day and have a root canal but this would require re-injecting me or alternatively have the tooth pulled there and then. Given a few minutes to run through my options I asked how long to pull a tooth and was told less than a few minutes. Compared to 40 minutes back for a root filling and the fact I had been in the dentist now for 50 minutes already I opted to have the tooth pulled seen as though I was already numbed up.
They prepared me and began the extraction. He pulled and pulled and then the tooth shattered, leaving me sat in the chair a further 30 minutes for all the rest to be taken out piece by piece. Turns out I had a double root to the tooth and this is why there was so many problems. 5 years ago the same tooth but lower left started up and was again numbed and given a choice. I opted this time for the root filling but in August last year I began to have really bad pain in that tooth. I stuck the pain for 3 days before finally ringing and booking at a new dentists with a female dentist who is suppose to deal with patients who have anxiety. Bad news was the appointment for new patients wasn't until Dec so was given an emergency dentist number. After 2 further days I could stand pain no more and rang the emergency number. I drove 10 miles to the appointment told receptionist I had bad experiences in the past and was assured this dentist would be ok. I was shouted through and laid down, the dentist pushed down on my tooth and the pain was so bad I had tears running down my face. This receptionist promised me a caring dentist instead what I got was a lecture a prescription to treat an abcess under a root canalled tooth? and sent home in more agony than I went with.
December came I found an excuse not to go and cancelled and now the impending date is this Monday 16 Jan and i'm more nervous than I have ever been .
I have read this website back to front and I understand a little more about the injection and the fact it is normal for my tongue and throat etc to feel numb and that I won't suddenly be unable to breathe. The troublesome tooth when i've got the pain feels like it's cracking when I walk so I suspect it could be fractured. Having done loads of research no website supports the fact a tooth root filled can get an abcess so have any of you guys had a tooth that hurt to touch in any way, excruciating to press down on and cracked or felt like it moved when moving? Also a few people have told me a root canal tooth is the hardest to extract so i'm scared to death a repeat performance of my one tooth pulled is about to be repeated. Last time it felt like the guy was going to break my jaw he pulled that much and the noise it made was horrible. I already know this tooth will be pulled but is this likely to happen on the 1st visit?. The tooth is noticably different has more of a glass effect and the filling has broken away in a few places. They did say when they root filled it may not take due to the way they had to do it. The emergency dentist said it needs to come out it's basically dead but my fears are taking over I really want to do this without sedation.
Please can anyone put my mind at rest
