I am fearful of having a root canal on my left wisdom tooth. I need the tooth since I do not have a regular tooth there. I am fearful because the tooth has a 90 degree curved root. It looks like it grew in horizontal and then took a right turn up. I am 61 years old and the tooth as been perfect all these years until it cracked. It has a crown on it now but it is still very painful when I bite down and sensitive to anything cold. I am fearful this will not take. Can it really be done? Would it be better to have it extracted and get an implant? Anybody else have this problem and how did it go?

Root canals can be done on wisdom teeth if there is enough room to access it. I'd highly recommend you have an endodontist (root canal specialist) do the procedure as wisdom teeth can be trickier than usual.

Thank you for your reply. I am seeing a endodontist and when he first saw my tooth, he said he had never seen a tooth like mine in all his career. He felt it could be done, but would be complicated given the space in the mouth and the curvature of the root and being a wisdom tooth. But he was confident it could be done and he had all the special instruments to do it. But I am still afraid of it, especially when they say they have never seen a tooth like that. Even my regular dentist said the tooth was interesting.
