Hi,

First i would like to explain my situation. I did not go to the dentist for about 6 years. Now i have finally gone, i needed deep cleanings on all quadrants and 9 cavities. One of my cavities was almost a root canal, (close to it according to dentist) Half my tooth was almost decayed away she replaced it with a big filling. My tooth hurts when i eat if i bit something down in the MIDDLE of it, if i chew something using the edge of the tooth it does not hurt, only if i bite down in the middle where it is concave. My insurance wont cover a root canal until August. Otherwise it would be almost 2 grand. Is this a root canal? Is this pain normal? I dont have acute pain or general pain only when that happens. Alot of the food i chew does not cause me pain but mostly sandwiches do. I do not want to ask the dentist cause i am starting to trust her less and less.
What should i do?

Thank you

I don't know when you had the filling done, but they do sometimes need time to settle down, August is not that far away if you can manage to eat on the other side. I had a very deep filling that lasted me about 5 years and I have just had to have a root canal on it, so yours may settle until August for you. Fingers crossed.

I wish you well and I hope you manage to get to August with it, I knew mine needed doing with rct because I got an infection on it so that told the dentist it was time to do the rct. I had one course of antibiotics that settled it for a couple of weeks but it flared up again so I had another course of antibiotics then he did the rct. I am at the moment waiting until Sept with the tooth to make sure it settles then he will put a crown on it. :)

Hello

It is impposible to give you a good advise without seeing you (and a photo) but I will try my best :):

Assuming that the nerve of the tooth was healthy before the filling, the need for root canal treatemt after a deep filling should usually come if the tooth is very sensitive to cold over a long period of time or simply spontaneus pain. If did not have any of this kind of pain I doubt if it is for a root canal treatment (however there are no rules about it).

A common reasons for sensitivity is a high filling, and than while closing the teeth together too much pressure goes to one tooth instead of spreading between all teeth. This is very common after making multiple fillings.

In any case, if it does not improve within a week, I would go to the dentist to check it out.
