Hi !

My girlfriend is 19 weeks pregnant and she had a painful tooth last week. She phoned the dentist to explain her issue and she was able to get an appointment quickly because the dentist said that a dental infection can affect the pregnancy. Thus, we went to the dentist on Friday. The dentist took an x-ray and saw a recurrent decay underneath a filling. The dentist decided to prescribe painkillers and to book an other appointment next week to fix the tooth.

Today, my girlfriend went to her midwife. The midwife told her that it can be dangerous to fix this tooth during pregnancy because the cavity is underneath a silver filling and mercury vapors will be released from the filling when it will be drilled. The midwife said that these mercury vapors could be very toxic for the baby even if the dentist take certain precautions. She suggested to remove this tooth if it is not possible to wait the child birth to fix the tooth. Now, my girlfriend and I are worried. Is the midwife right?
