I had root canal done on the tooth about 2 months ago and asked at the time about the front of my tooth said it looked disgusting. My dentist said yes unfortunatly due to the decay of your teeth you'll just have to get used to it... i asked about the option of a cap and she said yes but in time when the rest of my mouth is stable. I thought fair enough and left.

This morning however i thought it was a bit of food that was lingering only when i used my tongue to remove it did a piece of hard bit come off the front of my tooth.

I thought it was intially enamel and then on closer look i think it could be the top part of the front of my tooth cos it looks disgusting underneath... grey and discoloured. I've got no pain and im waiting to hear back about an emergency appt for today failing that ive got my 2 monthly check up monday. My children says it looks disgusting and im really worried that the rest of it will fall off...

Could it be anything else and can it be saved?!

Its tough to say without looking at the tooth and the xray...but if you have enough tooth structure left a post and core + crown may be an option.

Hey
The reason for the breaking of the tooth is probebly that the healthy enamel which was left after all the treatments was to thin to handle the forces applied in the mouth.
The black colour might be a material that was placed by the dentist.
In any case, in most cases it is very possible to keep the tooth. It might be needed to crown the tooth though, but still it is difficult to answer withouth seeing your tooth.

Thank you for your help; managed to get an emergency appt earlier and yes the dentist said exactly that about the thin layer. And yes a crown is an option they just want to get everything else stable in my mouth first.

He sorted it put a sealant on it and it doesnt look so bad now! Thank god!
