Gold crowns

I have just had root canal and need a crown. It just occurred to me that I have another root canal that was done and crowned several years ago but at no time did the dentist give me the option of a gold crown. Do dentists still do gold crowns

and if I said to my dentist can I have a gold crown would he give me one? What are the advantages or disadvantages of a gold crown?

gold is functionally great. Disadvantages may be cost more in some cases and appearance
