Me again.

I have been having so many problems with this dry socket on the lower left that I did not really notice what was going on on the other side of my mouth.

During my mega appointment on the 23rd May, I also had the last molar on the lower right at the back filled, and the one next to it - an ancient, previously root treated molar - was prepared for a crown.

The root treated tooth was done ten years ago with no after problems, but the filling was dodgy and she told me crowning it would give me a better biting surface because of the extraction on the other side.

I did notice that my jaw still felt a bit 'tight' on the lower right side for a long time after, a bit stiff and I noticed it when I smiled or clenched my teeth. There has been no toothache, just the feeling you have when the local has worn off and there has been a bit of pushing and pulling and injections.

Today, I notice I have a very large, long, soft swelling at the base of my gum where it meets the inside of the cheek, there is no toothache, and it does not hurt continuously, just feels tight and swollen. But if I press on the lump under the temp crown area (RT tooth) it causes quite severe pain that lasts for a while. The gum tissue in this area is an extremely strange colour, a browney, yellowish colour, not pink and extends quite a way along the jawline. Here's a pic :) you can't really see the discolouration in the photo, it probably looks like a shadow, but from the back of the jaw to almost my front teeth is shades of black/brown and yellow. [broken link removed]

Just wondering what it could be. It looks like bruising, but it has been getting progressively worse instead of getting better.

If it had anything to do with the recent filling in the tooth behind it, surely the tooth would be sore, not the gum and jaw.

I know soft tissue swelling usually indicates infection - but I don't see how it can be after all the antibiotics I have taken over the last two weeks?

It would be nice to have an idea of what it could be before I present for treatment to get the perm crown placement on Tuesday. I need to psyche myself up if the dreaded drill will be produced again :o she told me no drilling this time, just the new crowns to go on. I wonder if she will need to investigate the new filling.

Many thanks, as always.

Nice pic. :)

Could be a bruise y'know. When the dentist injects in these areas, sometimes a wee blood vessel gets traumatised leading to bruising, bit of swelling, colour change, difficulty opening etc. Pressing on it might cause a muscle spasm also. I guess you won't really know until your dentists gets to check it.

I did this to myself the other week - flippin eedjit that I am, I gave myself the jab before a crown prep. Not an easy task, and I ended up bruising the bone. Ouch! At least i didn't have to prep the tooth myself. Now that would have been interesting.  :P

And hey. look on the bright side. You have nice lips  ;D

:o

Pars :)

Update - if the filling is that one by the gum level, it could be an amalgam tattoo - ie gum stained by the filling, but that wouldn't account for the pain.

Re: Gordon or Pars - your advice needed yet again

and i thought it was only gordon who did his own local ;D

Re: Gordon or Pars - your advice needed yet again

Thanks Pars...not least for the compliment [smiley=drunk.gif]

No, the filling at the gum line has been there for a while. My tongue was covering the replaced (white) filling. Nice to be able to get white fillings in back teeth now. If I wasn't such a woos I would really want to get my other four amalgam fillings replaced immediately....I guess with my teeth, I will get the opportunity at some point over the years though ;D

There is definitely something going on. It is quite swollen...feels like I have a wad of cotton wool back there..and sounds like it too when I talk.

As you say, I will find out soon enough...

Had to laugh when I saw the pic again tonight now I have had time to think about it. Who in their right mind but a dental phobic would worry about their gums, take a picture of the inside of their mouth and post it on the internet ;D

Re: Gordon or Pars - your advice needed yet again

dunno about you Pars, but where i come from that would be eejit!! lol

keep cracking the jokes, it makes my day!! ;D

Re: Gordon or Pars - your advice needed yet again

Don't worry Pars...I grew up thinking it was edgit until I moved to Ireland for a while. But I have the excuse of being Canadian. Although my dad called me an eejit many a time, I had never seen it spelled ;D

Re: Gordon or Pars - your advice needed yet again

Well I certainly look like a bit of an eejit today....very 'hamsterish'. My lower jaw on that side is really swollen - but still not painful unless I press it, which, of course I have been doing because I am a silly sort of person ;D

Q. Nice Mr Dentist, whenever I press my jaw it hurts. Is there anything I can do?
A. Yes, stop pressing your jaw.

Re: Gordon or Pars - your advice needed yet again

Definitely agree with Pars that it sounds and looks like a haematoma, ice packs might well help a bit with the discomfort.

I also agree about the lips. [smiley=notworthy.gif]

Re: Gordon or Pars - your advice needed yet again

Lol! [smiley=hug.gif]

Blowing you both as big a kiss as I can with this chipmunk face ;D

I just hope it's nothing to do with the filling. I can cope with her digging about with the RT tooth, but not the live one.....ooh er
