Education/Advice please? (Long post, my apologies) Back at the end of December I had Alloderm (cadaver gum) grafts on 24 teeth (outside of the tooth, not the palette side). I had severe gum recession and asked to have the procedure all at once, I thought I'd get it all over with; the Perio tried to talk me out of it.
The surgery wasn't exactly 'fun', but I was 'okay' through the procedure - after the anesthetic wore off I wanted to kill myself from the pain. I was given plenty of Vicodin, but still the pain was incredible. 2 weeks later it took a full 90 minutes to have all the stitches removed. This session removing the stitches has pushed me over my pain tolerance threshold and I'm now terrified of anything to do with my mouth. Because of the sensitivity, they got me back in the door to have 6 teeth re-grafted harvesting from the roof of my mouth this time. Of those 6 teeth, I'm told that the new 'gum' took, but not as much as we would have liked or needed. So, I now have 4 teeth with severely exposed roots and they are so sensitive that I can eat nothing that involves chewing (or any food that could possibly rub against those roots). I've had no real food since that first surgery in December (I've lost 30 lbs).
My question(s). It is unusual for my own gum to be rejected? I really do trust my Perio, but it is my own gum, how can it not have taken?
I am scheduled to go back tomorrow and I am scared to death (trembling, sweating, hard to breathe, in a total panic). All I know about tomorrow's appt is the Perio told me he is going to 'paint' over the sensitive roots. He did warn me that this was going to be painful. Obviously, there is more to the procedure than just 'painting' the teeth then, right? I've tried researching online, but there are SO many options that I have no idea what to expect. Can someone tell me what part of 'painful' I need to prepare myself for? Please?
Lastly, as best I can tell from online sources, any product that they paint on will wear off in usually 3-6 months. Is my Perio just not telling me that when this wears off and my palette has grown back, that he will need to do another graft!? Thank you for your help, in advance.
