I had my appointment for the cleaning 2 days ago, it went OK.
Now I need to have yet another tooth out at the top, and a new set made to fill all the gaps. For this the dentist tells me he will need to shave off the remaining teeth ( 4 or 5 ) to be able to fit crowns on them to hold the new teeth in. They will be removable ones . I really do not like the idea of the teeth being made into stumps. Has anyone had this done? Is it painful and does it take long.

I wish there was an alternative ( he told me implants wont work for me )

Hoping to hear from anyone who had this done.Thanks.

I don't have a denture yet and only had my extractions last week, but I did not know people had to get crowns in order to fit a partial denture. If I had wanted to go through getting more crowns and risking needing more root canals I would not have had my teeth extracted. I thought a partial denture was made to fit your teeth, not make your teeth to fit the denture. I wish you the best of luck with your procedure. If they tell me I have to get more crowns I think I will just keep my gaps.
I have had crowns done and redone. getting them done was not painful because they numb you. but afterwards I always had excruciating cold sensitivity once the permanent crowns were placed. I have some sort of sensitivity to the cement they use.

Are your remaining teeth healthy? because it seems like that would be more than the cost of a couple of implants if you had to crown all 5 teeth? especially if they are healthy and do not need crowns? I think I would want the opinion of another dentist before going ahead.

Also I forgot to answer about the length of time it takes. The appointment is usually around 90 minutes because they have to numb you first. then the tooth is prepared. There is some drilling but not a whole lot, they just shave off a bit from each side. Then they take impressions and then they place temporary crowns on. You usually keep the temps on for around 2 weeks when the permanents come back from the lab

Hi I don't understand how you can have crowns that are removable. All my crowns are stuck on with cement and are not coming out at all. Are you sure they said crowns I haven't heard of this ever. But as you know I am not a dentist. I would not be happy about having this done until I understood what is supposed to be happening. Ring the practice and ask them what your treatment plan is. The person that answers the phone should be able to access your file and inform you.

Remember you have to give 'INFORMED CONSENT' to any and all treatment. You can't do this if you don't understand the procedure. I don't see whey they want to damage other teeth for a denture, it isn't necessary from what you are saying.

I hope you are well I got you mail and will reply soon :friends::butterfly:

Yeah, I'm confused by this too, I've heard of bridges that are supported by permanent (not removable) crowns on other teeth, and I've heard of dentures that are removable but supported by implants, but not this. Can you get your dentist to clarify what exactly he is planning to do?

I am a bit confused. :( Sounds a bit similar to what my mom had though. With her if I remember correctly either all or only the bottom teeth were "shaved off" and then she got permanent crown-bridge on top of them. She had it done about 8 years ago and she is fine. But not sure this is the same case. :(

I think it sounds like a removable bridge but instead of using implants as the anchors he is planning to use your own teeth by placing the crowns on them? But my concern is when you remove the bridge to clean or sleep or for whatever reason your natural teeth with be the little stumps which are fragile. Or I am thinking about it wrong and the crowns stay in but maybe something attached to them from the bridge? I tried googling it but didn't come away with this specify scenario.

I think pippa has mis-understood what he said. :butterfly:

I googled too but I won't post because I think links are not allowed.
I did see where sometimes "teeth must be prepared" to fit a partial denture but it was not clear to me whether this is only done if the teeth are not healthy and need crowns anyway. I showed that sometimes a notch is cut in the tooth to form a "rest seat" for the partial denture and the clasps. other times the teeth are crowned.
I do not like the sound of this and I hope this is not what they will want to do to me. I had my tooth extracted because I did not want it toot canaled and the other I had extracted because I did not want it crowned. no way do I want more done to my remaining teeth. I'm worried now about my appointment for a partial

Scaredy you can post a link about this. Don't be worried about your partial denture, I had one for 6 months earlier this year and it didn't impact on any of my other teeth. :butterfly:

I know one thing, Pippa needs to talk to her dentist before she agrees to any of her teeth being messed with like this.

Ok, I get it. So sometimes they crown the adjacent teeth and the removable dentures clip on to the crowned teeth. (The crowns themselves are not removable of course) - I guess this is something they might need to do in cases where the surrounding teeth are not strong enough/suitable for having a denture clasp to them just as they are?

Scaredy, I wouldn't worry too much just yet, it really doesn't sound like something they always do for partial dentures, just one way of doing it. There's nothing to suggest that your own partial will have to be done this way.

I am trying, but honestly I am a little freaked out now. as bad as I would like to replace my molars there is no way I can go through more crowns. I have been through so much as it is and the main reason I wanted a partial instead of implants is because if it hurts me I can take it off all by myself. I suffered so long in one botched bridge after the next, going around begging dentists to cut it off for me.
if I have crowns that hurt me.. again.. I can not take those off myself and end up begging the oral surgeon to extract the crowned teeth.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
The dentist definitely said crowns. So now I will ask him if he meant crowning the teeth to build a bridge, or if he meant the tiny silver coloured " crowns " they cover the filed down teeth with before placing the denture over them/ onto them. He said it would be removable but since I read here and looked in google it seems a bit odd, so I will have to ask again.
It could be that systems vary all over the world.

Scaredy, thanks for your input,I do hope you get yours sorted soon. Not nice to have discomfort and worry at the same time:(

Thank you Pippa, I am wishing you good luck too on your denture adventure. When are you supposed to have this done? My appointment is not til November and that is just to talk about it, not to do anything yet.

I am waiting for the dentist to write out a detailed plan of what needs to be done with the costs outlined,so I can see if all or most of the expense will be covered, or how much I will be expected to pay extra.

It is awful that you have to wait so long , it is really best to go as soon as possible as waiting around increases tensions ! I really feel for you.
