Im 35 years old. I know this should of been done sooner but I never had access to good dental care and never had any issues. I went to the dentist yesterday because my lower left wisdom tooth is aching. Xrays were taken and the 2 bottom wisdom teeth are partially erupted and horizontal. The top 2 wisdom teeth are still in the bone but are vertical and are not giving me issues. My question is this....has anyone had horizontal, partially erupted wisdom teeth removed with just local anesthetic or gas? I don't want to have GA.

I had my full boney impacted (more difficult to extract than partially erupted) horizontal wisdom teeth out with local anesthetic. I can’t say it was pleasant and it was very difficult for me to get numb (and I wasn’t numb for a good portion of it), but I survived to tell the tale. I too was terrified of any type of sedation which is the only reason I had only local.

Hi MattGeer, I had all my wisdoms out with just a local too. Do not ask me about the exact positions, some were impacted and some partially erupted, that's all I remember. However the procedure was ok, I didn't feel anything and it was very quick. The scariest part were the sounds and instruments, but it was quick and no discomfort involved, just pressure as I was completely numb. So if make sure they make you nice and numb so that there is no physical discomfort. The only thing you will have to deal with is the anxiety itself. If you get a chance to get nitrous then this problem will be solved too.

All the best wishes

Thanks. I have the consultation on Monday. Im gonna ask for just the LA and gas. I know the IV is safe but something about it haunts me.

Actually having choices about how would you like to approach your treatment is the amazing thing about modern dentistry. I wouldn't feel comfortable with iv either.

All the best wishes for your consultation :)

Im hoping they give me a choice. My brother had his out a couple years ago and he only had the option of being sedated. How old were you when you had yours removed? Im 35

I will say it took me going to a few different oral surgeons before I found one that would do the extractions without sedation. So if the one you go to tells you they won’t, maybe try to fina another dentist who will? I was 30 when I had mine out.

I absolutely second this. You have your preferences and have your reasons for having them. If your current surgeon cannot give you what you are looking for, then there will be plenty of other surgeons who will so if any possible for you, do not hesitate to keep looking for a practice that does it with LA. I think that LA is the easiest option, no big preparations, no huge assessments or monitoring and it's also easier for the body to deal with it. The only 'problem' is that you are awake and the surgeon therefore needs to take a bit of care of your needs too in terms of explaining, putting you at ease, give you a breather etc. and he also needs your cooperation to be able to do the procedure. I would get very skeptical if someone would try to push me into sedation, but this might be because in my country getting sedated or having GA 'just' for wisdoms is rather unusual. I was 20 when I had mine out.

just left the consultation with the oral surgeon and it could not have went any better. He actually preferred that I stay awake. He's going to remove all 4 wisdom teeth on Thursday with just LA and laughing gas. I'm actually pretty excited to get past all this suffering.
