How can a perfectly good tooth end up requiring RCT???

Tooth with no cavity at all (not so much as a speck of decay on X-ray etc) nothing found at all on physical exam... how can that tooth (front top) end up abscessed??? I was told trauma, but even if I banged it into the bone cutting off the blood supply, doesn't bacteria need to still be introduced somehow??

Anyway this is hugely disappointing, days of excruciating pain, 10/10 post op needle soreness, for a trauma that I can't remember which caused the pulp to die?

I didn't know this was possible.
 
Bad news but I'm afraid it can happen. You don't need bacteria for a dead tooth but if bacteria get in then it's harder to get a good result.
