how do i know if a root canal re-treat has failed?

i've had my lower left second molar (the number 7) root treated twice now (both times caused by dental error ). i've had the post, and core build-up placed but am yet to have the definitive onlay. i keep getting mild pain/'rumbings' from this tooth - very mild throbbing and strange 'sensations'... my endodontist said that clinically it looks fine - it's only been three months and she advises that it's too early to see substantial radiographic changes (either positive or negative).

my questions are:
- how do i know that the root canal is failing? are these 'rumbling' pains significant or normal?
- if it's not failing, what are these 'pains'?

as mentioned, it's been around three/four months since the re-treat.

The endodontist has access to radiographs, we don't, so our answers will be much less accurate.

I really wouldn't like to hazzard a guess without seeing the films, sorry.
