How much damage will TMJ cause to the jaw.

My dentist has told me that TMJ clicking and pain will cause "deconstruction" of the jaw. What do you all think? Is there likely to be any permanent damage?

Mike's the best informed on TMJ on here. I've never heard of "Deconstruction" did he explain what he meant by it?
