I’m scared and stressing out about an appointment I have in 2 months in June. It is still so far away but I seems so close. I have to get a tooth extracted that day and they have to cut it into three pieces which makes my anxiety even worse. I’m so scared that they won’t numb me enough or something will go wrong, I don’t know, im just overthinking the worse things possible. I’m gonna take earbuds to listen to music to block out the sounds around me but I know I’ll still feel the pressure and still hear a bit of it. Is there anything I can do to calm this stress and anxiety?? I shouldn’t even be worrying about it yet, I still have a while.

Hi there,

first of all well done on having that scheduled. Also, it is good to know what exactly are you scared of. This will help you and your dentist finding ways around it. Does your dental team know about the things that worry you?
To your fear about not being numb: your dentist should be happy to check whether the anesthetic is doing it work before doing anything. Also, it is good to have a stop sign in place: should you notice absolutely anything, your dentist can stop immediately and make sure to numb you some more. There are techniques to do that so nobody needs to suffer pain nowadays.
The dividing the tooth won't be different than the sensation of a drill, if you ever had a filling.
Is this the first time you are getting an extraction? And is your dentist nice?

All the best wishes

Hi,

I hope you're not worrying too much. Tooth removals are a journey that starts with you making the appointment. The time up until the extraction is when you need to try and find and build your support network.
Talk to people you might know who've had the same type of extraction, find something you might be able to bring into the office to help you de stress (music is a great option! Maybe a stress ball?) Bring a friend or family member as a supporting shoulder.
Talk with your dentist office about your concerns and see if they can give you a more detailed overview of the procedure to help you know what you expect.
Concentrate on the future after the extraction. Is there food or things you're missing out on due to the offending tooth? Make a list of some small attainable things you want to do.

Hope you find peace with it all!
