Hi all,
in september/october i had all my teeth out and immediate dentures in, these are immediate dentures so obviously dont fit very well. My problem is the my gums and bones have receded so much the front bottom are almost flat, with my dentures being so loose im having to restick them in about 4/5 times a day, which is very painful as they are well stuck at the back. i feel very low and in pain most of the time. Been to docs, she gave me 5% local anaesthetic to rub on the sore bits, this helps, but only for a short time. my main concern is is it possible to get dentures to fit when there is no gum/bone left or am i looking at bone grafts?? Im back at the dentist for my 3 month check up next week but the pain and uncertainty is sometimes upsetting. Thanks for listening

Hi Ellen, have you looked into mini implants to stablilise the bottom denture? These can sometimes be used even when there is not enough bone structure left for traditional implants, and they've become very popular over the last 10 years. Perhaps you could schedule a consultation with an implant specialist (or two) and get an opinion on whether they would work for you?

Hi, ive not looked into anything at all, its only just occurred to me today thats why my bottom dentures are not staying in, there is nothing for the fixing stuff to stick to. So far one of the hardest things ive ever done (and only lost just above 1 stone, lol), will look into mini implants, thanks for the suggestion, cheers Ellen

Just an update on my horror story.
at present i cannot eat anything other that yoghurt/soup with my teeth in but almost anything without them in. Ive lost almost 3 stone, and have my proper set, which fit really badly. My mouth has ulcers, worse ones at the front, have steroid cream and local anaesthetic for them. to top it all my dentist found a 'white thing' back in April, refered me to a specialist, having biopsys on 29th Sept, (the wait has been awful).
My 1st second set were sent to my dentist, and they were someones elses, so had to thru the impressions fit again, but as my gums would of settled all the more i thought the next set would fit better.
Ive had them 3 weeks now, its a nightmare, my doc has given me the strongest painkillers available. With fixodent they last 3n a half hours, providing i dont eat anything less if i do.
Can anyone give me any advise on how to get thru this, keeping positive is hard

The following advice is based on what is typically seen with your history and my not be correct for you.
A person gets immediate dentures and after some months you ridge will change significantly. In many office it is typical to do a lab reline after a few months. Sometimes the changes are so great and the initial tooth positions are off due to the inability to try in prior to extraction so you make a new set and take you time trying it in to make sure the teeth are in a good position for you.
As to you current problem you will most likely get rapid relief by doing a soft tissue temporary reline.
Another possibility to explain your unusual pain is that the shape of your ridge may be irregular with sharp points and undercuts then you need alveoloplasty to reshape the bone.
