I have a dental infection and the current painkillers are not doing me any good. I urgently need some advice because this will be another sleepness night. The only painkillers that work are annadin extra but you can only take a maximum of 8

I have just taken extra strength ibruprofen and I really do not think they will be any use so this pain will continue and I cannot take annadin extra because I have just taken the ibruprofen and will have to wait for four hours but then what? the annadin exta will wear off in four hours time and I will be back to square one with severe pain. Paracetamol is no use either and never has been any use for me for any kind of pain

Sorry to hear you are in so much pain the pain relievers aren't helping. Have you tried a cold compress/ice pack on the area?

Ibuprofen is really excellent, so I think you should be feeling better soon.

I agree with Sol. Use an ice pack if you have one available. I’ve had that terrible infection pain, and it got to the point that I was throwing back Tylenol like crazy. Hope you get some relief soon.

Think the antibiotics are beginning to work because I am not in as much pain as yesterday and I can bite down but its still a bit sore to bite but yesterday I could not bite at all. I have only had one lot of painkillers this morning and that was for a headache not dental pain. The Ibruprofen i think is longer lasting so whereas the painkillers I was taking would wear off in 4 hours, the Ibruprofen last for about 8 hours. The painkillers I took for the headache only last 4 hours and so I have not taken any more as I feel I do not need to (despite still having toothache). I am putting this toothache to the test to see whether when I woke up pain free it was because I was on longer lasting painkillers or that the antibiotics are starting to work. It has been 7 hours since I woke up and 3 hours since the headache tablets wore off and I still can bite down so I honestly feel the antibiotics are working. Obviously whilst I am at home resting and sleeping trying to catch up on lost sleep as I had virtually no sleep for 2 days, I do not feel I need any painkillers, but I have somewhere to go tonight so I will be taking some painkillers tonight. Not only does this tooth still hurt to some extent but it gives me a headache so I will be glad when it is all over. I tried to work out how this happened so that I know how to prevent an infection in future and I think it was because the tooth broke and was left broken and then broke further (I think due to grinding) and then infection set in because the tooth was more exposed. I have a good dentist who said to me why was this tooth left broken and I said I do not know. It never hurt so it was just left and he said you cannot leave a broken tooth because sooner or later something will happen to it. Well that time has come so when it broke further he just put a temporary filling over it to stop bits of food getting stuck in it and then gave me the permanent filling. It wasnt until the permanent filling was done that I experienced all this pain so something must have set it off when he drilled and filled it.

I'm glad the pain has went down to some extent and the antibiotics seem to be working but do empathize with you on the whole situation. seems frustrating .. Really hope you can get some sleep soon!

cheers folks. I am pretty sure I will get sleep tonight because the only thing keeping me awake was the horrendous pain and that has subsided somewhat and you know what they say.... All good things come for those who wait. I am not a nervous patient by any means because I have found an excellent dentist. I wasn't really nervous before but when my last dentist could not numb me up for some treatment she then said to me you have become immune to numbing and for anything like root canal you will have to be sedated or sent to a specialist. I said to her you are not sedating me under any circumstances so she said well that is the only way the root canal can be done because we cannot inject you. I said I will go without root canal and hey ho the tooth she wanted to root canal was not done and a couple of years later it got infected and the emergency dentist said it needs root canal. I then found my current dentist who did it with no issues whatsoever so he said sometimes the dentist does not inject in the right spot to get you numb for root canal so I said but she got me numb enough for a filling and he said but with root canal you have a different technique for numbing and she obviously did not do it correctly and he said there is nothing wrong with your mouth and you can be numbed up for anything has has been proven

I thought I was feeling better but I have just woken up with terrible toothache. I do not understand it. I had to quickly reach for the painkillers whereas I felt that during the day I did not need them. This is so annoying.

yes the painkillers did help and they last for 8 hours which is good but I do not understand why I had that pain and not in the day. I did not need painkillers during the day. I phoned the uk NHS helpline and a dental nurse said it is because at night you are more relaxed and during the day your mind is on doing other things. I find that quite hard to believe because all I was doing during the day was a bit of shopping and then watching a bit of youtube. I was relaxing trying to catch up on lost sleep which I did do so I really have to disagree with what the nurse said. It was 4am when the pain woke me up and I took some of the good painkillers and slept again until 9.30 so I have had more than my quota of sleep for the night albeit broken. The nurse did say that I am not going to really feel better until I have completely finished the antibiotics and if I need painkillers in the meantime I must take them and not try to go without so I said i was not trying to go without because I genuinely felt that I did not need them in the day so did not take them. I only take painkillers for severe pain

Have you tried applying corsodyl gel to the surrounding gum area, I found this as soothing as a hot compress when I had an awful toothache last year, also arnica is a good in pill form for aches. Hopefully if you layer up on methods of pain relief you'll feel better

Hello, I have almost finished a weeks antibiotics. I am also on strong painkillers. The pain in my tooth is just as painful as it was before I started the antibiotics. The painkillers are very good and last for up to 10 hours then wear off. When they start to wear off I get tooth pain and take another painkiller. This evening I did not take a painkiller straight away and the pain got worse so I took one. In case anyone is wondering why I take one not two painkillers it is because I am on 400mg strength and you can only take one tablet at a time. Anyway I wanted some advice because my appointment at the dentist for root canal is the 27th September and if I am still in this amount of pain after almost finishing antibiotics I feel that I need to see the dentist sooner. I phoned the UK NHS helpline and got put through to a dental nurse and I started to explain to her what my symptoms were and the events before the infection was diagnosed. She then said to me "You do not have an infection". I said to her my dentist xrayed the tooth and said he could clearly see an infection. She repeated herself and said I am a dental nurse with years of experience. I said no doubt you have years of experience but you did not see the xray that the dentist took of the tooth so how can you say that I have no infection. Then she said to me I do not feel we are getting anywhere and so phone your dentist in the morning. I am astounded that she is even working on the helpline. All I wanted was to find out why after almost a weeks antibiotics i feel that I am no better and she goes and tells me that its because the dentist gave me a large filling and i have no infection ?

Oh wow Patient.. so sorry about this. what a frustrating experience first being in pain, but then to have someone so adament that doesn't have your information put such a strong opinion without fully knowing your info. I would need to take a few good deep breaths after that conversation . Can you make an earlier appt straight through your clinic without going through the NHS line? maybe they have some cancellations that came up? I would want to be seen with that pain too just for some relief and peace of mind.

I’d say you certainly need to contact your practice and get an emergency appointment as waiting another two weeks isn’t really an option if the pain hasn’t resolved.
