Hello,

I had a root canal on tooth #13 about 2 weeks ago. The endodontist made the opening very small and put in a temporary filling. My general dentist is going to put the permanent filling in this coming weekend, but she recommended holding off on a crown because she said it is a bicuspid and that I might be able to get away with not needing a crown for 2 years. She said that if she sees a hairline fracture later on that we can worry about a crown. This is the same general dentist that thought I was grinding my teeth and didn't realize I needed a root canal. So I am concerned that she may not have enough experience. Just worried that's all.

Can someone please advise based on your experience if I should go ahead and have a crown put on tooth #13 to protect the tooth?? My endodontist recommended it because he said if I fracture my tooth then I will lose it. I don't know what to do.

Any help is very much appreciated. Thank you so much.

If it's a canine, then you could get away without a crown. It would depend on how big the fillings already in the tooth were, what your bite was like and a few other factors.
