I know you should have a crown when you get root canal but I had a root canal on a lower molar a few years ago and never had a crown. The dentist at the time suggested it but for some reason it never happened. I cannot really remember why but the dentist left and no other dentist ever suggested it and I have never had an issue with the tooth. Why do you need a crown?

Because to get access to the root system to do the root treatment, you have to remove quite a bit of tooth substance, so the tooth is a bit weaker than it was before you started, there's also some evidence that root treated teeth are a bit more brittle than non RCT'd ones so usually a crown is suggested to restore the strength of the tooth.
