Is the same type of numbing needle used for fillings and extractions?

Will be going in to possibly fill a cracked tooth molar #31. If Dentist sees the crack is too deep, he will have to extract.

Assuming tooth cannot be saved,
do they generally give a needle just once at the beginning, or will I get a numbing needle first for the exploratory filling and then another numbing needle for the extraction?

I don't know the answer to this, but I can tell you that once you are numb for the filling you should not feel any additional injections at all.
