I had an infected root canal extracted back in March. It was after a root canal retreatment and failed apicoectomy. However, over 6 months later from the extraction, the gum where the fistula was still hasn't returned to normal. It has a whitish color when I look at it with a flashlight.

I am worried this could be a part of the root canal material left behind or a sign the infection is still there at a low level. Have you ever seen this kind of gum tissue before? What could it be?

I'm super nervous about it. I've attached a picture of the area now :S

That looks like a bit of bone showing through, nothing to worry about at all. The socket is still being remodelled after the extraction.

(Root canal material is completely inert biologically, which is why we use it, even if it was left behind it's no issue.) But that isn't what it is :)

Hi Gordon, thanks a lot for taking a look. It's hard to tell in the photo but the whitish area is actually a small bump and is softer like tissue... anything else it could be? It seems too soft for bone. There's also another white round thing in the top left of the photo, could it be the same thing?

I asked my regular dentist but they didn't seem to know :(

Sorry, I'm out of guesses too, need to see you to have a better chance of coming up with something :)
