So ive been down a long road for around 10 years now working on overcoming my dental phobia. To keep it short i managed to overcome it with 2 extraction appointments and 2 IV sedation appointments and came out dentally fit for the first time since i was 9. However that all came to a end 4 years ago now but as you expect i have a few things popped up.

I need 2 fillings redone that are damaged, 1 root canal redone as it is causing some pain with a food trap and finally one deep filling is to be changed to a root canal as it wasnt working too well.

So right now Ive got my booked appointment to get it all fixed in 4 hours from now. That being said im completely terrified again! Im scared that i might remember my treatment or have some sort of bad experience from it like it goes wrong or whatever. It seems crazy when ive done this exact thing twice before and first time i remembered nothing and was super happy and second time i remember maybe 5 seconds of work which was because he was just finishing up and didnt want to bother knocking me out again.

I would love any super fast advice or just any help at all that will stop me from chickening out and not going because in about 5 hours i want the joy of being dentally fit again sooooo badly.

(bonus info... yes this is all with the same dentist that ive gone to as he specialised in patients with phobia and its thanks to him i have so many healthy teeth right now even if they have been filled or whatever i would of never of got the work done otherwise.)

I'm in your shoes right now and my sedation appointment is about 11 hours away. I'll be getting 2 root canals done, but mine is just oral conscious sedation with meds and nitrous. No iv for me. I am feeling nervous too and this is my 4th time since May. I guess I'm more worried about the aftermath than the actual procedure. I usually remember very little and whatever I do remember, I'm too sedated to care. I think the most 'traumatic' thing I remember was feeling like I was choking on a little piece of tartar, coughing a bit and then being offered water. Then they must have cranked up the nitrous because I went right back to sleep or amnesia state after that.

Good luck with your procedure. Just remember the hardest part is getting there. Try to focus on the outcome of having a healthy mouth and a confident smile!

Goodluck to you too! Lets hope we both be back here soon enough to share success stories. Your right too getting there is the hardest part.

Hi Fynaticx,

sorry to read about your anxiety, I'm however very confident that you will make it through the treatment this time too. Do you have someone to accompany you who can take care of you not chickening out?

You mentioned not wanting to have any memories about the treatment. While iv sedation obviously is what helps you to deal with the treatment, it doesn't help with the anxiety, as you noticed yourself - no matter how many sedation appointments you had overcome, you still wish to chicken out before a treatment. Sadly, this is the negative side of sedation - to get rid of your anxiety and be able to see a dentist, you need positive memories about a treatment and there is no quick fix to that. It includes experiencing that you are in control and can stop the treatment whenever you want and that there is no pain. This is, on the long run the only way to treat the phobia instead of just treating your teeth. So if you one day want to get entirely fit, it might be a good idea to go for sedation methods that make you aware of the treatment in the future - oral sedation or nitrous.

Keeping my fingers crossed for your todays procedure, all the best wishes and let us know how it went:clover:

I did get around 5 fillings done without sedation since my first group of appointments to get dentally fit. My dentist agrees that sometimes sedation is the right approach if my dental work is more urgent such as teeth having holes in them. If the work isnt too urgent and i have a little while to give a few appointments a try if i need it then i dont get sedation.

My update so far. I just took my sedation meds and my appt is in 40 minutes. 10 minutes after taking the pills, I'm already floating on air without a care in the world. Only a few more hours until I can pass out on the couch

Hi all

Hope your appointments have gone well today and you’re feeling better!

I had my first appointment under IV Sedation today and to be honest I do remember more than I thought I would. I don’t think this is a bad thing though as I feel a bit calmer knowing what sort of things were happening and the sedation just made sure I stayed relaxed enough for the treatment to go ahead.

Hope to hear how you got on :)

Update-

I went to my appointment, however my dentist was running late by about 15 minutes and while i was waiting i got into a really bad state. When it came to me going in i walked into the dentist room and i just froze up in fear. I stood in there for about 10 minutes while my dentist spoke to me casually about hobbies and stuff. But after a while the state of fear got too much for me and i got really light headed so i asked to go outside. Once i was outside i then couldn't get courage to go back in. My dentist ended up coming outside to me and said he will get me a appointment very soon so i can keep practice up.

From writing this message this next appointment to try again is in 24 hours. Ive spent the last week since my failed appointment going into the waiting room of the dentist 4 times to practice. I feel much more confident each time and even after failing i feel better. Hopefully this time will be the time i over come my fear but i feel its important that if anyone reads this in a similar position and you failed a appointment you have to keep trying. Never give up till you beat your fear!

I will continue to post on this thread till i eventually beat my fears

It's great that you don't beat yourself up for not having made it through an appointment and that you keep on trying. This is not a failure, it's just getting known yourself better and improving. There are good days and bad days when it comes to dental fear and the only thing that counts is that you keep on going. Very well done on visiting the waiting room of your dentist diligently last week :)
Keeping my fingers crossed for your to be able to complete your next appointment, look forward to your updates.:clover:

Update-

Now only 3 hours away from my 2nd try at my appointment. The nerves are setting in but being honest with myself i doubt id ever manage to go to the dentist feeling completely calm. Im just trying to keep in control and not let my fears convince me of horrible outcomes, the reality of it is im going for a sleep and getting some bonus dental work done while im sleeping.
