Hi. Looking for some words of support.
I have a traumatic extraction years ago in the USA. It was done by a Max Fax surgeon as a complicated procedure. The local anaesthetic had not been enough and instead of stopping and giving me more the two dental nurses held me down. It took ages and I was very traumatised. Luckily my dental health is pretty good so have not needed any further extractions until now. One of my upper molars has cracked all the way through and needs to come out. I could not face it with just a local so have waited for 3 months to have IV sedation. D Day is tomorrow and I am terrified. I am a nurse so know the Midazolam just stops you remembering the procedure but I will still be awake and aware. Not sure I can do it.

What I would like to hear is how aware I am likely to be and whether the sedation will be enough to keep me in the chair! Many thanks in advance.

Hi. I had that years ago for removal of all four of my impacted wisdom teeth. And for me losing teeth are my worst fear! However I can honestly say I don’t even remember anything. I know I was awake, and aware so I’ve been told lol but I don’t remember a thing. You’ll be just fine! Honest ?

I have had IV sedation about 6 times, and not once was aware of any trauma. Like you, I always worried about remembering pain, or difficulty, but have been blissfully unaware each time. I'm sure that you'll do really well and it will be behind you in no time.

Hi there. I just wanted to wish you luck. I had a similar experience with restraint by multiple people as a child in the dental chair and it has been very hard to overcome. I am getting a root canal on Friday without any sedation, just drugs to "take the edge off" and am petrified. After that, I'll have a long procedure with IV sedation and I'm actually kind of excited for it in contrast to this one without anything, ha! I don't know if you have the stomach for this, but I watched several youtube videos of people getting extractions under twilight sedation, and they seem to have NO CLUE it is happening - sometimes their eyes are open, sometimes closed, but they seem super tranquil. And I've watched videos of people RIGHT AFTER coming out of sedation. They seem pretty shocked that it's already over and don't seem as though they've just sustained any trauma. That's what I'm wishing your way - total tranquility. :)

Oh I really do hope so. I will report in tomorrow when the evil deed is done!

Wishing you both lots of luck and positive thoughts as well. I have also had the experience as a kid of them restraning me and it was definately traumatizing and it really affects you its something your mind and body don't forget..I hope you both do well with your procedures and let us know how it goes! I had Midzolam for an upper endoscopy in which I was absolutely terrified to have.. I don't remember a thing.. other than mentioning I was going to a bakery after I was done. and I've had a few of them , always same effect.

Arrrggg! Dentist is unwell so has cancelled my appt today. I have had about 2 hours sleep as so stressed and anxious. Now trying to reschedule which is difficult due to my job but not going to be until the end of next month at least! I am in bits now.

UGH!!!!! I really feel for you.

Yep. I am not happy. I have waited over 3 months already

I had IV sedation when I had a molar extracted and an implant placed. I only remember the doctor injecting the drugs into my IV and waking up and it was all over.

Sorry to hear it was cancelled hope you don't have long to wait. Don't think watching youtube vids (as suggested above) is a good thing tho.

Not to long I guess if you can stay distracted till then.

2 days after my birthday!

Hi SnowWight,

sorry to read you have to wait for more weeks to get your treatment. Your last extraction experience sounds awful and it is impressive that you took the courage to see a dentist again after that.

Hope you can process the bad news today and get some proper sleep soon. Also hope you find a way to deal with any anxiety before the next appointment comes. I used to write a journal a lot in order not to get crazy because of the waiting time.

To your worries about sedation. We have an interview with Omar Iqbal here on the page, he is a NHS dentist providing sedation. You will find some input about how sedation works in it, from the point of someone who treats sedated patients all day long. I can also encourage you to read the article about sedation which might give you some more information.

Snowwight,

I'm so sorry to hear about the reschedule, that is hard when you just work up the nerve after being so anxious and it gets cancelled. If you have any flexibility with your work at all, I encourage you to check with the dentist office on cancels. I know you said it was hard with your job so might not be an option but. I work for a medical clinic and I know how people get in on cancels regularly when they keep checking. HOpe the time goes by quick for you!

Unfortunately because I work as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in a GP surgery there is not much flexibility. I had to turn down the first two dates as no Doctor cover. It is what it is. Would rather have a dentist who feels well undertaking my treatment. I know how difficult it is as a clinician to call in sick.

ahh.. yes, that is so true! I agree to I'd rather have a well dentist .. and it would make it really hard in your situation with scheduling. well I 'm sorry to hear this didn't work and hope the time flies by for you!

Just wanted to update. Although I didn't think the sedation would be enough I can confirm that I was 'away with the fairies' throughout the entire procedure. No trauma. No drama. No fear. No pain.

So glad to hear this Snowwright!!
