Hi
Tomorrow is my extraction and dentist suggested a bone graft in case I wanted an implant. I petrified and it takes a bit for me to numb up. Is an implant necessary? I’m over 60 and afraid as this dentist is new to me. Last time I saw her for a cavity she didn’t leave the topical on for too long and the injections hurt. I have a pretty high pain tolerance. Since I’m on prednisone 5mg I’m not sure if I should do the graft? Also scared of dry socket as I cough and sneeze a lot.

Is an implant necessary?
Not essential.

That really doesn't affect the chances of a dry socket.

The table goes:Smoking>Difficult extraction>Previous Dry Socket> Sex F>M, Lower teeth>Upper teeth.

Thanks Gordon. Will the upper molar drift? As for dry socket I have had it before. What is the covering called that they can use to prevent it? She also wants to do a bone graft. One other thing is she had mentioned antibiotics about two weeks ago as I’ve been on prednisone for a longtime. Her staff called and said not needed. It’s a bit confusing.

Will the upper molar drift?
Maybe, but not always.

What we use in the UK I don't think you can get in the US, Alvogyl was my first choice, but it tastes pretty dire so I tended not to use it unless the patient insisted, since dry socket is so rare I didn't think the assault on their taste buds warranted it!

Not needed.
