After a filling in February this year I got a lump appear on the inside of my gum, tongue side, by the tooth that was filled. I went straight back to the dentist and was told to leave it and see what happens as it might have just been trauma due to the filling. The lump went down and I forgot about it. But then a couple of months later it came back. I went back to the dentist the other day and the lump had again started to go down by the time I had the appointment. The lump usually lasts about 2 months at full size, then shrinks and is very slight.
Anyway, the dentist told me it is likely to be bacteria escaping from the tooth and in to the gum. They said I should have either a root canal or extraction. I told her I need time to think it over. I am sure what she says is true, but I just wanted some second opinions.
1. Does a gum lump that comes and goes sound like it is due to a bad tooth ? I know dentists are experts but how do they know the exact tooth it is coming from as the lump goes across 2 teeth ?
2. Would a extraction or root canal clear the lump on the gum ?
3. The tooth in question is midway along on the right hand side of my mouth on the lower set. Does this pose much risk for nerve damage with a root canal ? I am very paranoid about nerve damage.
Photos attached. Any ideas ? Thanks.
