Hi. I am extremely anxious when visiting the dentist and unfortunately shake quite badly. I do explain this every time I visit but I am not sure they take me very seriously
On this occasion I had to go because a front crown had broken off (next to my front top tooth). I got an urgent appt and told the dentist how anxious I was and he tried to reassure me before I sat in the chair but he soon told me that I needed a bridge. He suggested a Maryland Bridge and I said I knew about those as my husband had one. He said it would be £800. He then tried to talk me into having me teeth whitened for another £350. I told him I am on disability benefits and could not possibly afford that. He x-rayed my missing tooth and on his advice I agreed to have the remainder of the tooth removed. He then informed me that the cost of that would be £200. I just wanted to run. He took me to the desk and said I would need to pay £450 today and return tomorrow for the extraction. I told my husband when I got home that the Maryland was costing £800 and he could not understand why as his was don under band 3 on the NHS. The next morning on my return the surgery I was presented with a piece of paper to sign. I questioned the reason why I was having to pay £800 when my husband didn’t and the dentist told me that the NHS do not do bridges anymore and all he could offer me was a denture. He knew how scared I was, told me not worry and I eventually signed the paper. (I still don’t know what I signed!). After 25 torturing minutes my tooth finally came out and I was able to get out. I went back a week later and have measurements taken for the bridge and was asked to pay the remaining £550. Since speaking to friends in calmer circumstances I am being told that that the Maryland could have been done under the band 3 as it is a front tooth and I should not have been charged £200 for an extraction. I do feel he has taken advantage of me as I am so nervous. Please advise me someone!
