I am phobic, a sexual abuse survivor who was abused orally. I can't stand having someone's hands near my mouth or even my face, and even the smell of the dental dam can make me throw up! I also had a dentist who tied children down to the chair at the same time in my life so the two are really mixed in my head.
Until 6 weeks ago it had been to a dentist in 10 years. The work I had done 10 years ago was done under Xanex and I was only able to make it through part of the treatment plan. I did as much as I could and stopped.
When I first moved to this area researched all the dentists withing 3 towns of my home. I had heard from fellow phobes that Dr. L was very good, but was unable to make the phone call.
About six weeks ago I broke one of my front teeth and had to see a dentist. I didn't sleep for four nights, but made it to the first appt.
I explained my fears and we had been making baby steps towards fixing my mouth. I have two new crowns and one half of my scaling done. (that was the worst part for me) At my last visit on Thursday 07/06 I told Dr L that one of my molars near the one we were working on was painful. It reacts to cold and sometimes takes up to an hour to calm down again. He looked at at xrays, and tried pressure on the tooth and decided he wanted evaluated by an endodontist a three hour drive from my home. PANIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It took me years to see Dr L even though I know him personally and had many excellent references. Now he is asking me to drive 3 hour towards someone I don't know so they can put things in my mouth and hurt me for several hour at our first meeting. His ever efficient staff managed to get an appt for me on the following Monday so there isn't even time to talk about it.
I asked Dr L to perscribe an anti anxiety medication so I would know I had the option to use it if I needed to. He said he needed to talk to the other dentist to make sure that that would not compromise his ability to test the tooth and that he would call me before the appt. to let me know what was going on. He didn't call, but the other dent did. His assistant called to tell me that since they were sure I was going to need a root canal the same day, I should be prepared to pay for it!
I threw up in the trash can next to my desk. How did I get from.. I can talk myself through going for this eveluation, to you will be trapped and tortured by this man you don't know!
HELP
