I know people have a fear of gagging - mine is a more general fear that my mouth is too small. What do I think will happen? My jaw crack maybe, or I’ll choke on it. I do feel fear even if I put a large sweet in my mouth, and remove it immediately…

My mouth is small and I hate xrays but I can promise it will not crack your jaw. Even children can get xrays and their mouths are small too.

Kind of you to say - I know it’s not rational. My old dentist was pretty assertive. Since he retired, I have a very kind female dentist who is easily deterred by my anxiety…

@Joolier Fear is real, and it doesn't matter if it's rational or not it doesn't make it any less scary right? I have to go next month and I know they will do xrays because I have put it off got a long time. For me it's a gagging issue and also some pain because I am never fully able to bite down the way they want me to without it digging into me. There is such a thing as a panorex X-ray, which is just a tiny thing you bite on with your front teeth, no gagging or pain involved. But they say it does not show as detailed an image as the individual plates that I hate so much. I'm glad you have found a kind dentist. that can make all the difference.

Thank you! I’m told there’s a panoramic x Ray in our area, and the dentist says she won’t insist unless she or I am bothered by something - in which case I’ll pay for the private x Ray! I thought of hypnotherapy (I also have a fear of escalators) but that gets very dear. If all else fails I suppose there’s Valium from the GP…

@Joolier I have to get Valium from my doctor for my dental appointments. It's the only thing that makes it possible for me to not run screaming away from the dentist. It's very helpful. I'm glad you will have access to the Panorex if necessary, it is so much more comfortable, and it takes a lot less time.
