Good afternoon all,
Apologies in advance for the long rambling post. I wouldn't know where to get rid of my thoughts otherwise.
It has been ages ago since I posted on this forum. 2011 precisely when I had my first IV sedation. I had 3 to get all the work done that needed to be done. After this I attended my 6 month check ups at the same clinic, everything was OK. I've also seen a hygienist on a regular basis. I thought I had managed my dental phobia.
Fast forward to 2015, one tooth in my right upper jaw had to be removed as it had an infection and root canal wasn't possible anymore as it was already done in 2011. Also my wisdom tooth on the right lower jaw needed a new filling. Hence I had IV sedation again as I have a very strong gag reflex when it comes to my back teeth. I got told a few days after the treatment that I gagged during the procedure. Great,
I can't remember anything though. Only that I didn't feel great after the treatment. I went back to work the next morning but had to go home around lunch time as I did not feel well. A bit like when you get a cold.
I informed the dentist and got told that I was given a mix of two sedatives this time. Also approx. two weeks after the new filling in the wisdom tooth, it started to be painful. Back to the dentist, he couldn't find anything. Another week later I had a pain comparable with an electric shock in my jaw. Back again to the dentist, he x-rayed, but couldn't find anything.
By this time I had the suspicion that the nerve might have died. I've also had issues with the extraction side in the upper jaw. I had discharge coming from my nose. Again, back to the dentist, he blew air on the side if I can feel this in my nose. I couldn't.
I assume that the sinus was slightly damaged which caused the discharge. I also need to mention that I was treated by a different dentist in 2015 than in 2011. He was much younger and not for very long in the private clinic.
Forward another 2 years to 2017, half of the filling broke off the wisdom tooth. Back to the dentist again, this time a lady dentist, and she told me the tooth has to come out. And it can be done with sedation. I was terrified and didn't go back.
I was only seeing my hygienist at the clinic. She advised that I should see the periodontist (they do the treatment as well under sedation) as I told her that I am terrified to loose my front teeth. I think its childhood trauma as my mum lost all her teeth quite early, she must have been around 45-50. I don't want to end like her wearing full dentures. And I remember her gagging and throwing up when she cleaned them.
October 2024 I had tooth ache in my lower left jaw under quite a long bridge. Back to see the lady dentist. X-rays done, it has an infection. So therefore the treatment plan is as follows: surgical extraction of wisdom tooth right lower jaw, section of bridge from LL4 and LL8 removal and surgical extraction of LL4 premolar.
She left the decision to me if I want everything done in one sitting, or if I want to have it done in two.
I told her that I am terrified as the last IV sedation didn't feel great. She checked the notes, told me about the mixture of two sedatives last time, and I also got told that she is using Midazolam. The dentist is also qualified to do the sedation, so she would be doing both.
She also told me to eat the last meal the night before as they don't want me to be sick. Very reassuring.
And she also told me that the gag reflex is this there even with IV sedation. I am absolutely terrified and haven't booked the appointment yet.
I am so scared of gagging, being sick and not able to breathe or even choking. Or the dentist not being able to do the work even with sedation.
I also got told that I need to see the periodontist. She done the probing thing and I heard loads of numbers, 4, 5, 7 etc.
I told her that I am terrified to loose my front teeth and what would happen if I loose them. She said that dentures would be needed. And this is what I want to avoid at all costs. My gums are bleeding from time to time. I brush twice a day, use floss, Teepee brushes and Corsodyl. And the last time I saw the hygienist was in June 2024. But I noticed that my gum on my right upper canine feels weird.
I've done a lot of doomscrolling, can't sleep properly, can't eat anything. I also saw on Dr. Google that bacteria can harm your health. Thanks to Dr. Gordon here on the forum for clarifying that this is not true and that the internet shows a lot of nonsense.
Just some info to my person: I don't smoke, no diabetes, regular exercise (running, long distance hiking, swimming), 58, menopausal. And I got told that I suffer from "White coat" syndrom. My blood pressure at the dentist was something around 150 when I saw her in October. Its usually around 115-75 on average when I measure at home.
I am thinking of walking into the clinic tomorrow to book the periodontist appointment, and also book the first sedation appointment for the wisdom tooth removal. I would prefer going in than calling. I am better to talk to somebody in person than on the phone (English is not my first language).
I feel awful to be that scared and I am very embarrassed about myself, I am almost feeling like a total failure when it comes to go to the dentist.
I really would like to get rid of the fear and I would appreciate if somebody has got any advice for me please.
Thank you for reading the long post
