She told me that the dental school she referred me to can actually sedate me then do multiple fillings for me as I need extensive work done due to childhood neglect that I now a adult had been working on for the past few years.
So my face had swelled up present time and they had to drain it twice at the ER with ER dental surgeon. Very nerve-racking as I had only local anesthesia and was fully awake during both.
I had mentioned to the surgeon why I was having so many issues and I had informed him that many dentists just referred me elsewhere or to dental offices that are not covered by my insurance. I cannot work at the moment because of extensive health issues. My surgeon broke the news that my dentist had lied that the dental students don't do that and it would need to be a dental surgeon and even that is difficult as very few do that.
Is there no dentists or surgeons for special cases like mine?
I am in process of applying for disability but it's long, I have to appeal mine with a judge.

Hi @LeNoir! Sorry to hear you're being given the runaround 😥 . Maybe the other dentist who referred you to the dental school didn't realise that this service wasn't on offer there - she might have trained at a dental school in a different state where things were different? Still, she should have checked before referring you, so that's not really an excuse.

There will certainly be dentists and surgeons who offer services to or specialise in this, but as you found out they may not be in your insurance network :(. As provision may differ drastically from state to state, your best bet might be to call 211 and see what services might be available for special needs dental patients where you live... have you tried this?

@letsconnect hmm, I didn't know I could call a 211. I'll definitely look into that this week. 🤔

And yeah I think she didn't want to handle my case. All the dentist on my block have expressed they only did simple cases.
She was even increasingly frustrated cause I had to come in weekly when I first started working on fillings. She didn't think to ask how it happened and instead assumed I wasn't taking care of myself to even went on a rant about how oral care is important so even after tearfully explaining that my parents didn't provide proper dental care that I was there fixing what I had needed done as as preventative care, she just didn't want me as a patient. 😓

Were you referred to the University of Illinois Chicago school of dentistry? Their website mentions they offer sedation.
UIC Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are uniquely qualified to administer sedation for children and adults on an outpatient basis for many types of surgical procedures in a safe and efficient manner for the comfort of patients.

@geos Yes I was referred to UIC dentistry. I talked with a dental surgeon from there actually and they told me they do not do sedation for multiple cavities when they had to do a draining on me while awake. Iunno if things changed or there are just few students/surgeons who do that anymore. The reason I wanted sedation is my gag reflux and I'm just very traumatized from failed laughing gas with extraction, as well as I've just had really bad luck with dentists whom just dismissed without empathy. 🥺

The laughing gas just didn't work for me, I felt like someone was holding me down and I had bad trauma with assault that instead of feeling relaxed, it did quite the opposite and then the numbing didn't work one my bottom tooth, so I had to yoller for them so they would know that the numbing wasn't working.

I have no idea if they're just giving me a run around about sedation. I might try asking again about it as I have a follow up this Tuesday. It hurts to have issues with eating properly. I might have a undiagnosed condition that makes my teeth weak as well as I'm in the process of potential cancer or a difficult immune system issue currently. 😓
