I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good dentist in Edinburgh South that is good with phobic patients? I'm petrified and need a new dentist as my previous dentists retired.

Not sure if it's south (I don't know my way around Edinburgh that well), but I've heard very good reports about Martin at Craigentinny. That whole practise is particularly good with phobic patients.

hope that helps! Good luck in your search x

Thank you for your reply. Yes I've heard they are good. They are quite a bit away from me and I would be a wreck by the time I travelled there. Well an even worse wreck than I already am. Xxx

I hope you find what you are looking for! x

The only other place in Edinburgh that I'm slightly familiar with is New Town Dental Care, but they're definitely not south so not sure if the travel would be any better for you? All private too, but I think they'd be very good.

There's a trade off with the travel thing - if you can't find the right dentist for you nearby, it might be worth the added stress of venturing slightly further away for a dentist that you will feel more comfortable with when you get there!

Maybe you'll have some luck with that guy in Morningside? Sounded promising.

Keep us posted!

I think the guy in Morningside used to work at the Craigentinny practice. I will try and find out. The dentist I go to just now said he doesn't know anyone else that's frightened of the dentist ? I find that hard to believe. I'm not with an NHS now so not really looking for one. I just need a good sympathetic dentist ?

Hah, if he thinks he's not seen anybody else who's afraid of the dentist then he's *definitely* not paying attention! Yep, I think you're right, new dentist time.

You could try emailing the guy at Morningside and see how he responds? I tend to find that's quite a good barometer of how a dentist is going to respond generally, and it gives you an idea of what to expect before you go.

Yes that's a good idea thanks. I will try that. I did get as far as phoning the practice to ask if they are good with nervous patients and they said they were but that's what the present lot said!

Hi Rinda, I would second what Tink has said re travelling - I travel for about 40 mins on a bus to get to my Dentist but it is worth it for the peace of mind! There were Dentists nearer to me that claimed to work with phobic/anxious patients but turned out to be completely unsuitable so sometimes the extra miles are worth the effort.

I go to a Dentist in Edinburgh. I would be happy to send you the name of my Dentist via a PM if you are interested.

In the meantime it's worth seeing if you can have a no-obligation chat with the one in morningside and see what vibes you get.

Either way I wish you luck in your search

If you speak to your GP they may refer you to one of the specialist dentists around Edinburgh. They treat people with phobias and 'difficult' patients. I went to the one near Muirhouse last week for a consultation only and the guy was just wonderful! I was with him for an hour and a half and both he and the nurse were so patient and nice.
You can't just make an appointment with them, your doctor has to refer you. As far as I know, you stay within their 'group' until your immediate dentist needs have been resolved and I am pretty sure they will recommend a dentist that will be understanding to your needs afterwards.
I don't know much so far but if you have any questions, please drop me a note :)

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate it.
