Hey everyone,
So I have my first deep cleaning appointment in a week. I’m 23 and my dentist said that my gums compare to a 40 year olds. I have one pocket that’s a little deeper than the rest of my lower mouth. I’m pretty damn nervous! I’ve done some research and have even read some threads on here that help put my mind at ease but I still can’t seem to stop thinking about it.

I think my biggest fear (other than bone loss) is somehow making it worse in this weeks worth of time before the procedure and am just hoping that the deep cleaning does in fact help my gums re-attach/stop the pockets from getting any deeper. I’m a medical marijuana patient and I know that smoking will probably cause more harm to my gums (even though it will help my anxiety during this time) so I’ve been driving my head through a wall trying to hold off on smoking for a while until all of this is over with.

If anyone has gone through this procedure, am I over thinking things or is this as serious as I’m taking it? Also how did you manage to not think about it 24/7 leading up to the appointment?

MoreNumbing Pls,

:welcome: Welcome to DFC, We are glad you are here,, deep cleaning.. I so hear you on getting nervous before your first time. I was in that same place a few years ago. I think anytime something is new especially its scary.. Try not to youtube /google too much. That was my downfall. Though I did end u going and everything was alot easier than I ever expected and gained alot more trust in my dentist and hygenist. Here is my thread I did when I was going through it, hope it can be helpful .

Also , here is a great article on distracting yourself and keeping your mind off your appt beforehand.

I did email my clinic and let them know my fears that day and they got back to me and really encouraged me alot!

I hope it all goes well for you!! Let us know.

Hi there,

sorry to read how much you worry.. and reading the comment about 40 year old is not really the kind of stuff that makes people better I would say.. anyway, deep cleaning will help you stabilize the situation. It helps and that‘s why it gets done and you have surely read many success stories about people whose pockets got better after the treatment. I am sure that your situation won‘t get any worse during that one week so if you can, try not to worry too much.

All the best wishes and keep us posted

I was in your position 3 weeks ago. I have done 4 sessions so far and I am very happy! No pain... it is not something I would look forward to but it's certainly not as bad as I had in my head. Best wishes to you and well done for getting this far.

Hi, did your dentist suggest you see a specialist (periodontist)? It would be a good idea to do so for preventing problems in the future, especially seeing how you are so young and the added complication of medical marijuana use.

As everyone else has said, the cleaning itself should not be a problem - do make sure you let them know if you are not comfortable and if you’re in need of more numbing
:)

Thank you everyone for the peace of mind!! I’ll keep you guys updated for my first procedure and let you know how it goes.

My dentist did not recommend a specialist but I’ll be sure to bring it up and make sure to ask for more numbing if necessary. Again I can’t thank you guys enough for helping my anxiety.

Hey everyone, just an update.

Due to the Coronavirus my dentist office has been closed until further notice. So looks like I’ll have to wait it out for a few more weeks. Trying my best to not think about it!

Try not to worry about it. It really is nothing like you are imagining. My treatment's on hold now too but I am focusing on the fact that I have put myself on a good path and I will continue after this coronavirus emergency is over. Keep strong and stay safe!
