I've never had IV sedation done, and that is what I'm going to have tomorrow. :-[ There's some growing stress about that. I'll be able to make it to the office just fine, I'll get in the chair just fine. The IV? No problemo with the needle. Nothing about that bothers me...it's the idea of being conscious. They assure me that I will be so sedated that I won't remember it when I wake up. I'm confident that is the case, I'm just a little nervous.

I've had anesthetic for other types of surgeries before, but never for a dental surgery. I've had an extraction done before on a molar once, but was never sedated. They just numbed me up very good. I didn't feel anything but some strong pulling (which didn't hurt at all surprisingly). This is another "minor" extraction in the back...and I can't imagine it'll be any worse than when I was awake for it during the other type. Maybe I'm just being too optimistic...:-?

I will also be keeping a keen eye on this thread hehe, I'm getting sedation for my work too and would like to know how it feels

Sadly, even though I 'had' an IV sedation, I can't at all relay what it really feels like.

This is where I get all cranky because I can't really be of any help. *:'(

Hi Fox sent you pm.

Dave.:)

I had IV sedation twice last year for medical procedures and it was fine. I do remember waking up a bit, but not feeling ANY pain and I went right back to sleep.
IV sedation is not general anesthesia so you won't be "out cold". But you will be out enough to be sleepy and not generally aware of what's going on.
I have had sedation 4 times in my life (3 for medical reasons, 1 dental), and I wouldn't hestitate to use it again.
Hope that helps.
Good luck for tomorrow.......you will do fine!!!

Jen

Thank you Jen, you're a real doll for taking time to reply and ease my fears a bit more. [smiley=hug.gif] !

Just to reassure you further, I had IV sedation once for an extraction, which I was utterly dreading, but the sedation sent me floating away on a happy little cloud throughout the procedure. Although I was fully aware of what was happening, there was no pain or fear or anything like you'd expect, just a happy sort of dreamlike state where I felt contented and grateful to the dentist, believe it or not.

I would never have teeth out without it. Its totally awesome. It takes away everything, including all memories of the entire procedure.

Tiny pinch in the back of the hand, count to ten, open eyes and everything's done. Nothing left but to go home and sleep it off.

Awesome.

HA! Yes! That was I was hoping for! Thank you! [smiley=jumping.gif]

hey, i've had a few IV's before,

And can only reiterate what others have said.
It is brilliant, very quick to act and in all my experience I haven't remembered much about the procedure.

But please do be aware (this isn't to scare you but inform you), that even if you won't remember whats happened, you stiill will be awake, able to talk, able to move. If you really wish to.

So don't go in with the idea that you will be knocked out or asleep. Because then as they go to do the work, you might react badly to this. I have before on one occasion.

But that being said, now I go in thinking, well I wont remember whatever happens, so go for it.

I had some IV treatment yesterday, there were tears and anxiety and it's not fun. Not by any measure.

But feel much better having gone one step closer to my goal.

I think if you've not had it before and you are phobic it will be a very very good experience and perhaps make the whole thing easier.

You walk in, get all worried and upset about whats coming, get a lil injection. Next thing you know, you can remember again and all the work is done and your left thinking "When did that happen"

Hope it goes well and good luck :)

oh no.... soooooo not good with this....right now it feels like I'd rather pay $45 for the appointment cancellation fee than have that feeling. That's not a-ok in my book. I've been hoping I'll be so sedated I won't do any of those things. Can't do that feeling. *:'(

Decided it might be best if I put this off until a later time when I'm more prepared to deal with it. I'll cancel in the AM.

Please don't cancel!
You've come this far and done so well, mentally. Don't go back to square one.
Nothing in life is EVER exactly as we want it...but sedation could very well be the BEST for you. If you cancel, you may be denying yourself this great opportunity. You won't know if you don't give it a shot.
We're all cheering you on...stay strong!

Yes, you are responsive to the dentist, but you're not going to know anything about it. You simply won't rememeber anything! Once the stuff goes in, from your perspective, it will be instantly over with. It feels just like getting a GA. IV is the ultimate solution to having to deal with the fears of getting dental work done, simply because you won't remember it.

You say you "Can't do that feeling", but you won't HAVE that feeling. You won't remember it. As I have said, its pinch, squirt, open eyes, done. Simple as that.

Please don't cancel. I was totally terrified the first time, I almost had to be carried in the first time I had it - I was that bad. But once I went in and in the chair and it was suddenly over with, I was swearing to myself about why I managed to get myself worked up. It was so good, I paid serious money to have it again twice more since then and won't have teeth pulled any other way.

It totally rocks! Go for it.

Please don't cancel. People are correct, the IV is nothing to fear. I still have fond memories of the experience, believe it or not, I felt so relaxed, contented and floaty that although I was conscious of what was happening, I just didn't care. It was there in the back of my mind that it was something I should be thinking about but I just felt so warm and cosy that I was putting it off till later. This probably sounds a bit odd but I felt like I was a little kid being tucked up in bed by my granny or something. I was utterly terrified before the event, and pretty depressed about losing my tooth for a long time afterwards, but the IV and the extraction itself were not a frightening experience at all. I really hope you go ahead.

dont cancel please :(

I feel terrible for saying it now, just didn't want you to have any surprises.

My experience was this:

I went in for the first time ever for IV, I was expecting to be knocked out cold. It wasn't explained very well to me. And apparently I was playing up and wouldn't let them do the work and walked out. (I have no Idea I remember none of it)

But subsequently, I've gone into IV treatment, knowing I won't be knocked out cold, at least 4 more IV treatments, maybe more, and I've been totally ok and not a problem from me.

So honestly, just try it once, don't even let them do any dental work if you wish. Just go and try out IV sedation on its own. See how it reacts with you, see how you feel.

Its over before it begins for virtually everyone. Last thing you remember is getting the sedation injected into you then it's over. It's almost like a time machine. It skips the scary part in the middle.

I hope this helps

Futhermore,

nothing will beat that feeling of actually doing it. It's something to be proud of, it will make you happy. Once you get over the grogginess lol

Also it will make doing it again, or further treatments a little easier too. As you've done one already. All helps with the confidence.

I also found by going to the same place for treatments, you will trust them more than others. So you will a bit easier, comfortable and less scared when you go again.

I'm still very scared when I go back to the same place, but I can manage to go. I cannot say that about another dentists. I simply wouldn't go.

So I do beg you, go :)

ive ner had i.v sedation before but i hear its great youll do just fine if yu start to get nervous try some calm breathing that always helps [smiley=hugging.gif] keep me posted
