Nitrous for implant uncovering?

I feel really silly even asking this, but it is easier to ask here than to call the oral surgeon's office.

Would it be totally ridiculous to ask to use nitrous for uncovering my implants and doing the torque test? My surgeon scheduled the appointment but didn't say anything about using nitrous, which I have used for any appointment that requires shots and cutting.

Is it such a simple procedure that nitrous would be silly? I absolutely hate the shots and would gladly pay just to have it for those, especially the palate shot. Plus it helps the anesthetic work better for me.

I don't know if there was a reason he didn't mention it, or if it would be fine to call and tell them I want it.

Mountainmama,

I was just thinking of you and how you are doing .. and when the next step was . I would totally ask if it makes you comfortable that is what matters. Even if its a short appointment. If nitrous helps you get through the shots then I hope they will do this for you :). anyways of course I"m not a dentist:) just saying I hope it goes well and you can be comfortable.

Thanks. I know everyone here understands. I feel so silly asking if it is just a quick procedure.

I second krlovesherkids. Remember that nitrous is there to help you cope with anything that worries you during a procedure and you are the one to decide whether something is easy or not. Nothing silly about asking for nitrous if that is what would help you to cope.

I absolutely agree as well - ask for what you need. For every temp to perm crown replacement that I have had I tell them to numb me up so that I dont have to even worry about feeling anything. They always act surprised, but oh well - it helps me out. :) Good luck!

Thanks everyone. I will call tomorrow and ask for them to add that to my appointment.

So I kept forgetting to call it called today and asked for nitrous. The receptionist was super nice and said that it wouldn’t be a problem.
My appointment is January 14th. I am super nervous about it.

Glad it was not a problem and keeping my fingers crossed. Uncovering should go really quick - in the year I spent in a dental practice I wanted to be see uncovering several times so would wait until the patient sat and wait for a good moment to get in in a non disturbing way. Well and every time after few minutes I see the nurse around, asking could I get in to see the treatment and her saying "it's done already".
Is there anything in particular that worries you?

Sorry, I just saw your response. I am mostly terrified by the shots, especially around the front tooth (palate shot especially). I am also so nervous that the implant didn’t integrate with the bone.

I am sitting in the oral surgeon’s office right now. It is an hour from my house so I left early in case of traffic. I ended up getting here 25 minutes early. You can tell I have been here a lot, as the receptionist (one of four) greeted me by name when I walked in.

My heart is pounding and my hands are shaking right now. One of the main reasons I want the nitrous is for the reassurance that it will help the local anesthetic work better. My body won’t pump it through my blood stream as quickly.

Good luck for your appointment and let us know how it went. I think the thoughts about nitrous are good. You will do fine today.

Hopefully when you read this you'll have got it all over with but I can imagine what it's like being sat there+hope you got through it ok,let us know how you got on.

I am back! I made it. The shots were awful as usual but I got through it. My surgeon was great and kept joking with me to put me at ease. He has a great way of balancing humor and compassion.
Both implants passed the torque test! He put healing caps on both and said bone growth was ideal for both. I have the flipper in over the front tooth. He adjusted it to fit with the cap. It is starting to hurt now as the numbing is wearing off. I took some Tylenol and am now ready for a nap. I am exhausted from the anxiety and the nitrous.

That's great news, whens your next appointment?

I don’t know yet. I have to call the dentist and schedule it I guess. The dentist does the next part, with impressions and the crowns. The surgeon said to make an appointment no earlier than 2 weeks from today. That won’t be an issue, as my dentist is always booked, so it will probably be a month or so. I have a regular checkup scheduled for Feb 6, so I am hoping they will agree to do the impressions then, although they may not want to, since the checkups are covered by insurance and the impressions are not.

I just called the dentist and they can get me in January 28th for impressions, due to several cancellations so I guess things will move faster than I thought!

Not too long then. I need to find a new local dentist as they didn't tell me id been taken off their books,as I've been having regular checks when I go for my hospital/implant stuff didn't think it necessary to make appointments there aswell. They should be contacting each other anyway regarding updates on me.

I hope it isn’t too long. I know it takes at least 3 weeks for the crowns to be made, so hopefully by end of February.

I have found that sometimes the surgeon’s office contacts the dentist and sometimes they don’t. Same with other specialists. My daughter had to have two teeth pulled and the orthodontist was supposed to send over the information on which teeth. I scheduled the appointment and on that day, they still hadn’t received the letter (2 weeks later) so we had to reschedule. So frustrating!

Hopefully you will be finished soon as well! March, right?

It prob doesn't help that the hospital I go to is 45mins away in another city. March is my final appointment,I don't think that's when it will end tho.
