Non-digital x-rays

I understand that digital x-rays can be adjusted after being taken for color and clarity.

I understand that non-digital cannot.

My question is, can the machine for the NON-DIGITAL be adjusted BEFORE the x-ray is taken much like a photocopier or is it just a standard factory settings?
