After over 10 years sans dentist, i needed to go as a cavity turned into a toothache. i used a referral service (not sure if ok to post), but got a sedation dentist. I made appt for 2 days later (big big big big step for me) so i couldnt chicken out. i knew i had to go. Went for consultation, took xrays. I dont like using that hook like tool as accidentally poking my cavity would result in fisticuffs. Dr said i needed deep cleaning before he could decide about cavity. I made appointment for 1 week later for deep cleaning.
I was scared senseless for a week, couldnt chew and was dreading the day.
took my halcion an hour before the appointment and felt nothing. Was given medication to put under my tonge twice in the next hour and still didnt feel sedated, but was calm and not too anxious. Dentist says "time for novicaine" and suprisingly i wasnt too anxious. I did feel the needles especially the ones in the front of the mouth but at that point the halcion was kicking in. I got a cleaning over the next 2 hours and was in and out except whenever i was getting more needles. (dont worry, you wont care too much). I was in and out of awarteness over the next 2 hours. My ride said i was escorted to the restroom but i dont remember. After the cleaning, i went home and slept and had no pain at all.
I was so worried the meds wouldnt work but they did. Eventhough i remember the needles and recall moaning when they were given, i didnt really care too much and dont remember most of the actual cleaning. Now i need to go back for my root canals and fillings and hope the sedation comes through for me again. i couldnt have done this without sedation. Incidentally is anyone finding it difficult to find an iV sedation dentist in new england area?
Moral of the story, go do it, if you choose oral sedation, after the meds kick in, you wont care anymore. Someone said in another post that sedation doesnt cure phobia but i m mot trying to cure my phobia as yet, just need my teeth fixed.
hope this helps someone as reading your success stories helped me.

Yes. I live in Connecticut and the only dentist I have found for even Oral Sedation near me is Dr. Soccarras. I am due for Halcion my self, 3...but in liquid form. I too hope it works well for me. The dentist said it worked for a 300 pound man, and I'm only 185, so I hope it works for me as well. I hate the needles, too. I have root canal, extraction, molds, and crown and bridge work to do. Crossing my fingers, and I know it won't get rid of my phobia, but I know it will make me at least comfortable enough to actually walk in the door.

Tuesday 6/26/07, I had my 2nd visit for rct, crowns and fillings. (9 am)Took my halcions and etc but wasnt too out of it this time.
Went for RCT but tooth was infected. After all the numbing, i still felt it when she tried to hook something to the tooth. I've decided to have it extracted next time under IV. Then came the filings. I got more meds but really was aware of everything, the drill e.t.c but they werent too threatening. Got 4 or 5 gillings done with no pain.

Then came my crown, after the dentist drilled, they said i need a RCT on that one too. It was evening by now, rct doctor removed the pulp and sealed it temporarily till next time.
i was so scared of this day but this passed too. My doctor starts offering IV sedation in a few weeks, told them i'll be first on their list. All in all a successfull appointment. I feel like if i just needed a simple filling, i might not need sedation.
