Pain during filling

Even though my dentist gave me several numbing injections I still felt pain during a filling. I'm so worried that the injections just don't work for me, and I need to have a root canal done. I just can't stand the thought of going back.
Is there a reason why the injections don't seem to work for me? I'm incredibly anxious and don't know what to do.
