The gum surrounding my wisdom tooth has been playing up over the holiday season and painkillers were working. It's starting to get really painful and the painkillers are becoming less effective. I've had periocronitis on and off for a few years as my wisdom tooth are only half way through but it's never been this painful/swollen before :(

Please could anybody suggest any extra self-care measures I do at home until after New year?

Sorry to hear you’re in so much discomfort. Won’t your dentist be open tomorrow to see you as an emergency? I had a routine appointment at my surgery today, and they are open on Monday too. Otherwise hot saltwater rinses?

They don't open until the 3rd but I see there is a mobile number to call for tomorrow which would get me through to a dentist. Don't think it would be justified for them to come in just for this though :( I'll speak to the pharmacy tomorrow about pain relief and hopefully they can suggest something that'll help with the pain. Luckily had an appointment book for January so he could take a panoral to refer me to have my wisdom teeth out - i'd been putting it off for long enough, so I guess this serves me right!

I'll try the Saltwater rinse thanks! was tempted to use a mouthwash but didnt know if it'd make it worse - saltwater sounds like a way better alternative.

I would definitely ring tomorrow, even if it’s just to get advice. I had to phone the on-call dentist one weekend last year, and felt awful about disturbing her. My friend reminded me that the dentist was being paid to be on-call, and actually she had several out of hours people to see, not just me (she got everyone in at the same time). Better to ring tomorrow than New Year’s Day!

Tayl123,

If you are in alot of pain, is there an emergency dental place near you if you can't see your dentist? It might be worth just to email or phone them to see what they say. My dentist is at an emergency place, although most of my care is not emergency, the dentists there I can say are very understanding and kind about last min and after hour emergencies so wouldn't hurt to ring them .. although.. I know how it is and hate to call as well, HOpe the pain goes down for you!

Saltwater rinse is the way to go, unless you can get hold of some antibiotics from somewhere.

When I was on for emergencies between Xmas and New Year I was usually so fed up I was delighted when somebody called in. Especially for something easy like pericoronitis!
