"Partial" wisdom tooth extraction?

I had one of my wisdom tooth removed today, but the surgeon was only able to remove the crown and left the root in. According to him, the root had become fused to the bone and his drill couldn't reach that far back to break it up. He told me it will be fine as the gum will cover the root up. My question is, has anyone seen or heard anything like this? Would this have any impact on recovery?

It's a reasonably well documented procedure. Seems to work pretty well in most cases.
