Hello,

As you can see from my user name, I am terrified!

Basically I have what is apparently a pretty severe case of pericoronitis. But, I just have such a hard time believing that a tooth/gum can cause this much pain. A doctor and a dentist have both confirmed that that is what I have, (and I do believe the diagnosis! I’m just worried there’s something else going on as well) and told me that it really can cause all my symptoms, but I just don’t know. I feel like there must be something worse going on, maybe an infection that has spread into my jaw bone or tissue or something.. I’m so scared and just having multiple panic attacks a day. I went to a general dentist who referred me to an oral surgeon to have the tooth removed (although he said I have to get out all 4 of them!!! Which scares me so much!!!)

Anyway, I just wanted to ask some questions about pericoronitis from some experts. The dentist I saw was really nice, but since he was referring me away, he didn’t want to answer my millions of anxiety riddled questions. If anyone can explain it to me like I’m 5, and really dumb, I’d appreciate it!

1. Everything I’m reading about pericoronitis online says it lasts a few days or maybe a week. I’ve had mine since may. Is that really bad? Can it actually last this long?

2. Does it really cause pain this severe?? It’s an 8/10 on a good day, but frequently flares up to a 10. My whole lower jaw aches, I get an absolutely unbearable pressure pain in my sinus area that feels like someone is trying to break all the bones in my face. I have pain down my throat, in my nose and inside my ears, and I feel my ears pop when I talk. My cheek muscles are so painful I can barely open my mouth. That one did get better with antibiotics. I just don’t understand how a bottom tooth can cause pain in my whole face including all the way up to my eye?

3. The pain is so bad it regularly keeps me awake at night, or wakes me up if I am able to fall asleep. I have slept maybe 2 hours a night since may. Again, should it be that severe?

4. I even get a burning or tingling sensation on my jawline and cheek, sometimes in my eyebrow. It’s not constant, it comes on, lasts a few hours and then stops. Is that really bad? Can pericoronitis do that? All the way up to the eyebrow? I haven’t seen any websites mention this symptom.

5. I cannot lie down at all or the pain gets exponentially worse. I’ve slept propped up for 3 months which has really messed up my back. I also cannot sit in certain chairs or positions or the pain flares up with that too. I can’t bend down or lean forward. How can a tooth cause this?

6. Can you see an infection in the bone on an X-ray?

7. If I get the tooth removed, will all the pain stop? Can it really be that simple? After everything I have gone through..

8. If I get them removed under GA, will I still have to have a needle injected into my gum?? I want to avoid that at all costs.

The tooth itself doesn’t even hurt as much as everywhere else! The gum hurts like hell to touch though. And it had a bunch of pus and blood coming out of it before I went on antibiotics. The amoxicillin did reduce the pain, but not by a huge amount. But it got rid of the chills, pus and the worst of the jaw ache. The dentist gave me a new prescription for clindamycin and peridex mouth rinse, until I can have the tooth removed.

Basically I’m just wondering if this actually sounds like pericoronitis, or if I am dealing with something much worse. I know I should trust the doctors but neither of them answered the above questions so I am stressing out.

On top of that I am PETRIFIED of having the teeth removed. Like, I’m so scared. I’m just alternating between crying and panicking. I’m scared of the complications becuase although they are rare, they do happen, and who’s to say they can’t happen to me?? So I’m like, I can’t live in this pain, I know I have to get them removed. But I don’t know if I can cope with the anxiety of getting them removed! And I really don’t want to do all 4. I don’t mind the 2 bottom ones, obviously I have to do the infected one. But why do I need the top ones out if they’re fine?

I’m so scared of waking up in more pain, or with a worse infection. Or with permanent nerve pain. Or getting TMJ issues down the line…

Anyway. Sorry for rambling! If anyone could answer those questions, I would be really appreciative! Thank you so much in advance!

Hi! Didn't want to read and run though I'm not a Dentist. I had regular toothache that was the second worst pain I've ever had, so I definitely think it can hurt that much! Tooth pain can be brutal, whatever the cause. From what I read on here, dental infections don't usually do anything scary and are quite weak and I'm sure your Dentist and the Dr would definitely have taken any necessary steps to prevent problems like this from happening. If the pain is unbearable, it might be worth seeing about some Antibiotics if you haven't already had some ... I know some don't prescribe them but it was the only thing to stop my pain. As to removing the teeth ... remember they do it day in, day out and there're risks even driving to the appointment that are probably far more likely to happen. I know it's easy to worry but if we didn't have Dr Google, we'd all be getting these things done quite happily with no worry at all. I don't see why they'd do a local injection if under a General Anaesthetic as local is for pain control but you'd be unconscious so it'd seem it wouldn't be needed, but I'm not in any position to know for sure. I think they remove in pairs to prevent problems with the teeth over erupting and trying to find the lower one it bites against, and I don't think wisdoms chew much so just sit there doing not a lot, so may aswell take all. I'd speak to your Dentist as maybe you need another course of Amoxillin. You may wake up with a little pain, because removing teeth gets sore, but it should be totally bearable x

@Tigerlily thank you so much for responding 🩷 You’re totally right about Dr.Google, and my mom kept telling me the same thing. I probably would not have been quite so stressed out had I not read so many stories. I ended up having my wisdom teeth removed on Friday, they called me in as an emergency. It’s better I got it done quickly or I probably would’ve talked myself out of it!!! It was really scary, and I cried the whole time. But I had no choice, and now it’s done! I feel awful today, but it’s only been 3 days. I think that’s fairly normal.

I had been on antibiotics for about 15 days and they want me to continue for another 10. I still find it hard to believe that all that pain (it was all over my whole face! How can a tooth do that?!) was just from a tooth, but I am hopeful that once I heal from the removal I will be back to my old pain free self 🤞

@Terrifiedintoronto so glad you got help now and yes, totally normal to feel rough for some time, it's a big thing! Hopefully you're on the road to recovery and in a weeks time will be feeling much better x
