Hi all,

Hoping someone has been in similar situation to me and could shed some light or give some advice.

I recently went back to the dentist after a 4 year gap (bold me). I was told I have periodontitis. During perio probing I had depths of mostly 2 to 5 with a couple of 7 and 8 at the back teeth. Xrays were taken also. Dentist told me I had 10 to 30 % bone loss and disease was rapid for my age (32) and he didn't think it was related to poor hygiene as my hygiene looked quite good and that there may be another cause. He suggested I see a specialist. He said I don't need a deep clean all over and just deep cleaned the pockets.

Has anyone experienced this? I am thinking now will it continue to progress rapidly even if I keep really clean. What else could be causing this immune response?

Thanks,
K

Hi Kelli,

First of all congratulations on finding the courage to go back! It sounds like you got there just in time, before too much damage was done. Usually, it's possible to halt the progression of periodontitis. The most important factors are smoking (or rather not smoking ?), professional cleanings at an interval determined by the specialist, and good home care.

Most gum disease progresses slowly, but for some, it's more aggressive. In that case, there's usually a strong genetic component involved. Nobody really knows what is causing it, but it's possible that it is an autoimmune disorder in its own right. Obviously, you can't do anything about your genes, but seeing a specialist periodontist will give you a great chance to stop things from progressing. For example, there are various antimicrobial rinses and things that can be used, and a specialist would be able to determine what will help in your particular situation.

So yes, if it's at all financially feasible, do take up their suggestion and consult with a specialist (obviously, have a look at their reviews on Google, facebook etc. first before deciding on who you want to see)!
