Hi guys.

new here so apologies if posted in the wrong section.

since a child I have had very bad issues going to the dentist, I get very nervous, sick and I usually cannot even walk in to a dentist.

if I have any work done it will be under sedation or general anesthetic.

for the last 6-7 months I have had really bad pain in my top back Teeth (I suspect). I get constant toothaches, constantly throbbing, I cannot eat or chew, on the right side because of this.

also, when brushing my teeth, or if I’d accidentally agitate the back teeth, they will then bleed. Also my gums don’t feel right ejther, again throbbing pains in my gums.

also, there is the back last top tooth that seems to be growing sideways out of my gum also.

every day I will have a toothache, throbbing and very sensitive back teeth.

I have attached photos of the teeth that are me pain, again apologies about the state of my teeth I am petrified of Dentists.

could anyone give advise on what to do or what they think is wrong? Thanks

Hi Ukboy30,

Sorry to hear you’re having such trouble and that you feel this way about the dentist. I think your priority needs to be sorting out this pain. Finding a dentist who you can gradually build a relationship to be able to attend for routine care is possible but may be best to wait until you have this issue dealt with.

The overlap of the teeth in this area lends itself to food getting lodged in between the teeth and getting stuck. It can be really challenging to get it out no matter how well you brush or clean. This food packing can then lead to dental issues such as decay and gum infections. To be honest it looks like there’s a bit of both going on. Both may be contributing to the pain too.

In relation to solutions, realistically it’s going to be best to plan to remove at least one of these teeth (depending on the appearance on x-ray etc). That will sort out the food packing and make things easier to clean.

I see you’re based in London. Despite the COVID 19 restrictions on dental practices, there should still be a care pathway to follow through the NHS to be able to provide some help. Initially this may be antibiotics but I would hope that they could begin a referral process to allow this to be managed using sedation (or even GA

The earlier you get the ball rolling on this the better.

In the meantime, use chlorhexidine mouthwash or warm salty water. If you can manipulate floss to get it down and around the teeth, the more you can do of this the better- even if it bleeds. If it bleeds it’s a sign you’re getting into the right area. Obviously your normal twice daily brushing is important too. Analgesics (pain killers) may help you through the day/ nigh

I hope you get some assistance and some relief in the near future.

Thanks for the photos- they’re a great help.

All the best with it all. Once this area has been dealt with its worth looking up some of the excellent info on DFC about finding the right dentist for you. Some simple steps can make the process much more predictable and positive- yes, it is possible to have a positive experience!!
