I saw a facial pain specialist Tuesday. After a long exam and thorough questioning, he is pretty confident that a lot of my atypical facial pain is caused by a disc issue. He believes that the disc in my left jaw joint has been sliding out of place a little, and when my bite was off for almost a year after getting my last implant, the disc was completely dislocated. He said he heard some scratching noises when he listened to my jaw joints with a stethoscope but doesn’t think I have much arthritis in them.
He recommended physical therapy from someone familiar with the jaw muscles and biofeedback. He said I can call around and see if there is anyone near me, and he will call them after and question them to make sure they know the muscles well, or he can refer me to a few people that are about two hours from me.
So does physical therapy help? He said it should help “tighten” the area around the disc to prevent it from slipping in the future, but when I got home and did some research, it sounds like it mostly just controls pain.
