I went to the dentist today for the first time in 9 years. My main reason for going was that I was pretty sure I had an infection/abscess around one of my wisdom teeth due to a large amount of swelling around the tooth, as well as what feels like a lump on my cheek. It is very painful, and it hurts in my throat when I swallow. I also have pain radiating up to my ear on the same side sometimes. I am taking painkillers every four hours.

My dentist says there is no infection, but I do have gum disease and need four fillings. Could that really be causing all of the symptoms I mentioned? She said the lump was from me clenching my teeth and catching my cheek, but it doesnt feel like that is what is happening, when i clench my teeth its not like i feel any extra pain of me biting it.

I am scheduled for my fillings in eight days, after which I will be booked for a hygienist appointment.

Side note: I am on a biologic medication (adalimumab) for psoriasis, which weakens my immune system, so I am at higher risk for infections.

Yes. Sounds like a fairly classic case of pericoronitis.

Given that the dentist has had the benefit of examining you first hand I'd assume they know what is going on better than I do :-)

@Gordon Thanks for the reply. From googling pericoronitis it seems that there are quite a few treatments available, antibiotics, special mouthwash etc. But i wasnt prescribed anything. I was just told to brush my teeth better/longer plus use my water flosser every day.

I just feel like i should have been given something to calm it down atleast with the amount of pain i am in.

I’m not a dentist. You are correct that multiple treatments exist. However, don’t forget that pericoronitis treatment varies for each person depending on the severity of the inflammation. You mentioned you are seeing your dentist again for a filing. This will give them the opportunity to evaluate if the home treatment is enough or not.
