Hi! I might go on a ramble here, apologies.
About a year ago I got out of a not great mental health season, went to the dentist and got told I had a ton of cavities, which I got filled. The experience however left me very afraid for the future of my teeth, as I’m fairly young and want to keep them. I hadn’t taken particularly good care of my teeth before either, so I was no stranger to fillings, but finally I began to fear that the damage had added up. For the last year I’ve been battling the anxiety that because I’ve had so many fillings I’m going to lose my teeth. The good news, however, is that because of my anxiety I’ve never taken better care of my teeth. For the last year I’ve been brushing twice a day, flossing, and cutting down on sugar among other things. I want to turn over as new a leaf as possible.
About 3 months ago I went to a new dentist (I was away from home due to school) because of some dull tooth pain I had. I suspected grinding but was worried about something worse. She took some bitewings and didn’t find anything terrible, but some decay under a composite filling on a premolar. One of the many which I just got last year. I was surprised because I thought they lasted longer than that, but I chalked it up to possible just a bad filling and I just got it replaced about 3 weeks ago, before coming home for summer.
However tonight as I was flossing I noticed a weird dark spot on what I thought was my gum. I thought it was the recently filled tooth but it turned out to be the first molar on that same side. I couldn’t floss it out, so I looked close and now I’m worried it’s a cavity between my teeth.
Is it possible this is a cavity? If so, how come it didn’t show up on my x-rays just a few months ago (and somehow managed to escape my dentist’s notice at my filling appointment)? Can cavities form this fast? It all seems so improbable but it really looks like a cavity to me. I feel like I’ve just had so many and I just don’t know how much my teeth can take. And I’d really like this filling nightmare to end…
I’ve attached some pictures. I know it’s not always possible to diagnose from just pictures, especially given the awkward angle, bur I’m hoping for more of a “yes this looks concerning” or “no it’s probably fine.”
I have a dentist appointment scheduled with the first dentist from last summer that I was planning on canceling (I prefer my school dentist, and since I saw her just 3 months ago I’m not due until October), but now I’m reconsidering…
Anyways, thanks for reading. Any advice is appreciated
