Problem with back molar after 1st stage of root canal work - any ideas please?
Hi there,
3 weeks ago I had an abscess under a back, lower molar and took 2 rounds of antibiotics to clear the infection so my dentist could start root canal work on it a week later. She drilled through the crown on the tooth and partially cleared 2 of the canals and sent me away with a temporary filling. The tooth was fine for the 1st few days and then started to get pressure sensitive. When she saw me a week later she completely cleared these 2 canals but said she couldn't get into a 3rd, smaller one as it was blocked by what she called a 'pulp plug' or was calcified (she wasn't sure which). Anyway, she said she tried to gain entrance to the 3rd canal (including trying to dissolve it away the blockage) but nothing worked. Again, she sent me away with a temp filling and said it should settled after a week or so (and that she would then permanently fill it). It is now 4 days after that visit and the tooth, if anything, is even more pressure sensitive! Worryingly, it is now producing short-lived, twinges of pain when I drink anything hot and cold. Has anybody got any idea as to what is going on? I've had root canal work before but never had any pain like this - it's usually cleared up very quickly after the root canal work has begun or been completed. Please help if you can.
