Is this part of the normal healing process? Is this part of the normal recovery following a root canal procedure, and will it get better and how long? I can't bite down at all on food on a new temp filling on my lower left molar. This temp filling was done on the molar that I just had a root canal on 25 hours ago. It is very very tender, I can't even bit on a cracker without wincing in pain, so I chew only on my right side of my mouth. I will be getting a "build up with a crown" to replace the temp filling, I was told to do so as soon as possible, within six weeks; but like I said I can't even bit on a cracker without severe pain right now. I thought a root canal destroys the tooth's nerve endings, why would the tooth be sensitive to anything, let along biting on a cracker?!? Please help me understand this.

It's normal to hurt, I had a retreatment on a chronic abscess with no pain before, but the endo said he was "shaking things up" and he did. He prescribed a painkiller which I ended up needing and antibiotics. It even hurt to touch it with my tongue and I swelled, all was back to normal within a week, pain got a little better everyday and swelling went down in a week. Getting my crown in 2 weeks.

Oh thank you for sharing that, I have been so worried my problem has not been fixed and my nightmare will continue. Here I am up at 4am from pain that woke me from sleep, just popped pain meds. As with your situation, it hurts just to press the tooth and temporary filling lightly with my finger. I can't and do not dare bite down there with any food whatsoever. When will this nightmare end?! I hope my situation parallels yours and gets better over the coming days.

I am afraid to get a crown too early now, I want to be sure the endodontist took care of the problem and then that the crown will be the FINAL STEP. I suppose I should go ahead and schedule the appointment to have the crown, but schedule that for a week or two from now to be SURE that the pain goes away so I will know the root canal worked?

Oh god, like so many here, I JUST WANT TO BE NORMAL AGAIN.

Did you read the sticky post up yonder "post root canals"?

Yes but that sticky post is about someone who had a temporary crown after the root canal; i only have a temporary filling, not a crown.

The pain is less, I think my post root canal inflammation / pain is likely healing a bit. Still very scared to try biting down on any food on that tooth, will give it a few more days before trying that so I not aggravate it.
